“Horse racing is a difficult business. It takes a significant investment and a lot of patience. You can have the best horse on the track and still not win; it takes a lot of hard work and a lot of luck.” – Judy Maze
time here so much that we ended up buying a home here,” Judy says. “We’d never intended to live in Houston after I retired, so we sold our house there and moved here to Ruidoso full time. At that time, we didn’t know that Ruidoso would be our permanent residence, but to this day we haven’t looked for another home in Texas. We’re enjoying Ruidoso and the lifestyle; it’s a very beautiful and peaceful place.”
KISS MY HOCKS FOALS
Conda and Judy have maintained their interest in Kiss My Hocks babies through various partnerships, foal sharing and embryo purchases. In 2019, they asked trainers Clint Crawford and Renee Wilson to buy them a
Kiss My Hocks baby. “That ended up being Miss Beth Dutton,” says Clint, who along with Renee, has come to consider the Mazes dear friends in addition to being clients.
“They couldn’t make it to the sale, so they told us to just pick one out for them,“ Renee says. “She was the first horse they’ve ever bought sight unseen.”
The filly won five of 14 races, running second three times and third once and earning $314,877. Her wins include her trial for the Rainbow Futurity-G1 and the Rainbow Juvenile Stakes at two, and the Rainbow Oaks-G1 at three. She also placed second in the All American Oaks-G1.
“We have been fortunate to win five G1 races with four different horses, Miss Beth
Dutton being the most recent,” Judy says. “She turned out to be pretty special.”
They retired her at three after the All American Oaks. “There was a large interest in her, and Don and Fran Cavenaugh of Cavenaugh Quarter Horses LLC in Wayne, Oklahoma, purchased her,” Judy says. “Conda and I had some long conversations with ourselves and with Clint and Renee about what was best for her, and knowing her pedigree and what she’s done, we felt like it was time for her to go on to her next career. She went to a great home where she can maximize her potential as a broodmare.”
Conda and Judy consider themselves unconventional in that they don’t own a ranch or any mares. They consider their success
to be mainly due to buying good horses
