something.’ He had matched that little ole mare for $5,000. I won it by about a head. This mare went on and he ran her a little bit at three then he bred her, and she became a great broodmare.”
Now let’s look at the pedigree Garrettsmisspawhuska brought to the breeding program. She was sired by Leo and out of Jenny Dee by Jimmie Allred. Leo was bred by J. W. House of Cameron, Texas. He was sold and raced for Lester J. Manning and then he was sold to John Tillman, and they took him to Pawhuska where he raced in the 1942-43 racing season where he won 20 of 22 races. He was known as the “Pawhuska Powerhouse.” He was then sold to Enrique Salinas, who took him to Mexico where his race record is unknown. Leo was injured in a trailer accident that nearly cut off his front legs. He survived and was sold to Bill Rowe, the breeder of Garrettsmisspawhuska. Rowe sold him to Gene Moore and then Bud Warren bought him and, as they say, the rest is history.
Leo became a leading sire with his runners earning $605,265 with 370 starters, 211 racing ROM, 31 stakes winners and 30 stakes placed runners. His runners include the World Champion Miss Meyers. He sired the winners of nine of the first ten runnings of the Oklahoma Futurity. They were, in addition to Garrettsmisspawhuska in 1946, the fillies Leota W (1947), Leola (1950), Mona Leta (1951), Fanny Leo (1952), Leo Star Lady (1953), Miss Adelita (1954) and Rosa Leo (1955).
Leo became one of the all-time leading broodmare sires with his daughters producing 1,378 starters that resulted in 754 racing ROM with 95 stakes winners and 98 stakes placed runners. The Champions out of his daughters include Goetta, a World Champion, and such Champions as Jet Deck Jr, Ettabo, Gallant Jet, Mighty Deck, Dariman,
Dari Star, Little Blue Sheep, Jet Injun and Jet Charger.
comes to the barn again and his name was Dee Garrett. He said, ‘Son, would you ride my little ole mare one more time?’ I said, ‘Yes, sir! What race we in?’ He said, ‘Well, I got tired of them talking about that horse. So, we’re going to see if they can outrun
