Douglas McLaurin Aguirre Remembered
Douglas McLaurin Aguirre was born on Sept. 15,
1948, and died
on December 31, 2020, at the age of 72, in Hermosillo, Sonora State, Mexico.
Much of his life was
devoted to buying
and selling live-
stock, both in Mexico and abroad. However, his passion was always horse racing. At an early age, he became interested in learning and research- ing the “racing statistics” on the Quarter Horses. This led him to know much about the genetic lines and sporting trajectories of many of the horses of this breed, especially those who have made history in the development of the industry.
He was also a great promoter of formalizing horse breeding in the State of Sonora and pro- moting futurities for horses born in this state, the so-called “Sonoran Creole.”
In June 2018, the most important futurity of the Hermosillo Racecourse was held in his honor. No doubt everyone who knew him knows that his talks about horses were endless; it was something that made him feel alive.
Rest in peace Douglas McLaurin Aguirre. Always remembered, never forgotten by his fam- ily and friends.

Douglas McLaurin Aguirre nació el 15 de septiembre de 1948 y falleció el 31 de diciembre de 2020, a la edad de 72 años, en Hermosillo, Estado de Sonora, México.
Gran parte de su vida la dedicó a comprar
y vender ganado, tanto en México como en
el extranjero. Sin embargo, su pasión siempre fueron las carreras de caballos; desde muy joven se interesó en aprender e investigar sobre los “genes de la velocidad” en los caballos Cuarto de Milla. Esto lo llevó a conocer como pocos sobre las líneas genéticas y trayectorias deportivas de muchos de los caballos de esa raza, en especial aquellos que han hecho historia en el desarrollo de la industria.
También fue gran promotor de formalizar la crianza de caballos en el Estado de Sonora y de impulsar los futurity’s para los caballos nacidos en este estado, los llamados “criollos sonorenses”.
En junio de 2018 el futurity más importante del Hipódromo de Hermosillo se celebró en
su honor. Sin duda, todo aquel que lo conoció sabe que sus pláticas sobre caballos eran intermi- nables; era algo que lo hacía sentir vivo.
Descanse en paz Douglas McLaurin Aguirre. Siempre recordado, nunca olvidado por sus fa- miliares y amigos.

The Subasta Select Yearling Sale Canceled At The Hipódromo de Las Américas
The annual Subasta Select Yearling Sale, organized by the Mexican Association of Quarter Horse Breeders and Horsemen, was canceled because “the epidemiological con- ditions in the country prevent it from being carried out as planned, that is, on Dec. 1 and 2. It was originally scheduled from Aug. 25-27, then Oct. 20-22, and finally by early December, as already mentioned; all changes because of the COVID 19 pandemic.
Since most of the 615 yearlings registered to the auction have already been sold and
in some cases the owners decided not to sell them, they remain eligible for the Garañones and Select Auction futurities and the corre- sponding derbies to which they were nomi- nated at the time of signing them up for the aforementioned book.
For owners who maintain the decision to sell their horses, which is 79 at press time, the AMCCCCM Board of Directors proposed an alternative method based on the following:
• Install portable stables for breeders (16)
of the 79 yearlings to market directly from Nov. 30 and until Dec. 9, at the “in- field” of the Hipódromo de Las Américas, taking into account that on days of racing (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) the public will not be allowed to enter the area. This was in compliance with established health protocols and controlled access to that space at the agreed time (10 to 18 hours).
• No commission will be charged on the sale and all registered foals are eligible for the futurities and derbies already men- tioned, provided that the auction registra- tion fee and the corresponding nomina- tions have been paid.
• The owners of the horses consigned to
the sale by this method will pay the cost of the stables they request and the equine infectious anemia test, flu vaccination and placement of the identifier “chip.”
• The staff in the care of the yearlings must have a negative result to the COVID 19 test in order to enter and remain in the facilities.
The pandemic has tested the organiza- tional and economic capacity of all involved in the horse industry, and this has had to
be adjusted to the new circumstances. The annual auction, the most important event of its kind at the national level, is no excep- tion; expectations for 2021 are still uncer- tain, but no doubt the prognosis is difficult because of the havoc already caused.

La Subasta Selecta de Añales Cuarto de Milla, que organiza la Asociación Mexicana de Criadores y Caballistas de Caballos de dicha raza, quedó cancelada por esta ocasión, debido a que “las condiciones epi- demiológicas en el país impiden llevarla a cabo como está planeada”, es decir el 1 y 2 de Diciembre. Origi- nalmente se programó del 25 al 27 de agosto, después del 20 al 22 de octubre y finalmente para principios de diciembre como ya se mencionó; cambios que tu- vieron la misma causa: la pandemia por COVID 19.
Debido a que la mayoría de los 615 añales inscritos al libro de la subasta ya fueron vendidos y en algunos casos los propietarios decidieron
no venderlos, estos se mantienen elegibles a los Futuritys Garañones y Subasta Selecta y los cor- respondientes Derbys a los que fueron nominados al momento de inscribirlos al citado libro.
Para los propietarios que mantienen la decisión de vender sus ejemplares, cuya cifra es de 79 al momento de cerrar esta nota, el Consejo Directivo de la AMCCCCM propuso un mecanismo alter- nativo basado en lo siguiente:
• Instalar caballerizas portátiles para que los criadores (16) de los 79 añales los comercialicen directamente, a partir del 30 de noviembre
y hasta el 9 de diciembre, en el “infield” del Hipódromo de Las Américas, teniendo en cuenta que los días de carreras (viernes, sábado y domingo) no se permitirá la entrada del público a dicho espacio. Lo anterior, acatando los protocolos sanitarios establecidos y contro- lando el acceso a dicho espacio en el horario convenido (de 10 a 18 horas).
• No se cobrará comisión sobre venta y todos los ejemplares inscritos son elegibles a los futuritys y derbys ya mencionados, siempre y cuando se haya pagado la cuota de inscripción a la subasta y la nominación correspondiente.
• Los propietarios de los ejemplares que se apeguen a este mecanismo pagarán el costo de las caballerizas que soliciten y de la prueba de anemia infecciosa equina, vacunación contra influenza y colocación del “chip” identificador.
• El personal al cuidado de los añales deberá contar con resultado negativo a la prueba de COVID 19, para poder ingresar y permanecer en las instalaciones.
La pandemia ha puesto a prueba la capacidad organizativa y económica de todos los agentes invo- lucrados en la industria hípica, y esta se ha tenido que ajustar a las nuevas circunstancias. La subasta de añales, el evento más importante en su tipo a nivel nacional, no es la excepción; las expectativas para 2021 son aún inciertas, pero sin duda el pronóstico es difícil por los estragos ya causados.
