The last time a 2-year-old filly was named World Champion, man hadn’t yet landed on the moon. Laico Bird won the title in 1967, two years before Neil Armstrong became the first person to set foot on the lunar surface. It’s a measure of just what Whistle Stop Cafe accomplished in 2020.
She never lost. She beat the boys in the big ones. And she has been rewarded by being named World Champion, Champion 2 Year Old, and Champion 2-Year-Old Filly.
When owners Ray and Lainie Whitmire stepped up to accept the World Championship award, they brought their team, including trainer Blane Wood and jockey Ricky Ramirez. Lainie’s heartfelt comments demonstrated just what a team effort it had been.
“We couldn’t have done it without this entire group and everybody behind the scenes that make this possible,” Lainie said. “It takes an amazing crew to get a horse to this point. She’s a wonderful mare, but she wouldn’t have gotten here without everybody helping us get her to this point.
“Ricky did an amazing job. He sends us videos of hand-walking her, and he loves the mare as much as we do. Blane takes care of her like she’s one of his kids. Alyssa (Gillis) takes care of her. We get videos—we know exactly what’s going on with this mare all the time. It gives you a heartwarming feeling to know that everybody loves your mare like we do.”
Whistle Stop Cafe’s story began with breeder Bobby Cox, who had his own 2020 Champion with Ratification and was named the year’s Champion Breeder, and his trainer, the late John Buchanan.
In an interview shortly before his death last year, Buchanan recalled training the first four dams of Whistle Stop Cafe, mostly for Cox.
The family goes back to Fitting Celebration, the fourth dam, who was also the dam of Champion Brimmerton, bred and raced by Cox.
Cox offered Whistle Stop Cafe for sale at the 2019 Heritage Place Yearling Sale, and the Whitmire Ranch purchased her for $42,000.
