The late Charles Robinson got a Champion with the last horse he bred. Cers Final Try races for Robinson’s widow, Christina, and he was voted Champion 3-Year-Old Gelding.
Robinson lived long enough to travel to Ruidoso Downs to see his Imperial Eagle win the 2016 All American Futurity-G1. One Famous Eagle sired Imperial Eagle, and Robinson went to One Famous Eagle’s son One Dashing Eagle to get Cers Final Try from his Corona Cartel mare BP Shes All Corona.
Tony Sedillo trained Imperial Eagle, and he advised Christina Robinson to keep and race Cers Final Try. Sedillo, who also trains Cers Final Try, accepted for Christina at the awards ceremony.
“He looked really good as a two year old, but he had a lot of problems gate-wise,” said Sedillo. “I convinced her to just keep him and run him as a three year old. It turned out to be pretty good for the last horse Mr. Robinson bred, so she’s tickled.”
Even with the problems at two in 2019, Cers Final Try won three times, finished second in the All American Juvenile Stakes, and ran third in the Southwest Juvenile Invitational Championship Stakes-G2.
In 2020, Cers Final Try was a force to be reckoned with in all three of the major derbies at Ruidoso Downs.
The Ruidoso Derby-G1 came up first, and Cers Final Try ran second. He turned in his best effort in the Rainbow Derby-G1, which he won, and he completed the year with a third in the All American Derby-G1.
Hotsempting, winner of the Ruidoso Derby, went off as the 7-10 favorite in the Rainbow, with Cers Final Try the 4-1 second choice. Alfredo Sigala piloted Cers Final Try.
“We didn’t break with the pack and were behind a little early,” the jockey said. “Tony told me not to worry about breaking, that my horse would be best in the final 150 yards, and he was right.”
Cers Final Try defeated Hotsempting by a head, with Gold Heart Eagle V a nose back in third.
“It looked like in the last 40 yards was where he really accelerated,” said Sedillo. “He ran a good race. That horse has a lot of heart.”
