When Martin Stacy, who bred and owns Curls Happy Wagon with Michael Pohl, accepted her award as Champion Aged Mare, he noted the good job Kendra Storjohann Winkowitsch has done raising his horses.
“These horses are happy at my place, and that’s how she got the name,” Stacy said.
Stacy also commended both of the people who trained Curls Happy Wagon in 2020. Stacy Charette-Hill began her season at Remington Park in her home state of Oklahoma, and then when the owners decided to send Curls Happy Wagon to Los Alamitos in California, Juan Aleman trained her there.
“She’s a horse that everybody loves,” Martin Stacy said. “We’re so proud of her.”
Curls Happy Wagon came out running. In
her initial 2020 start, she captured her second consecutive Decketta Stakes-G2, leading every step of the way and crossing the wire 3/4-length in front.
Following two more races at Remington, Curls Happy Wagon invaded California, immediately establishing her credentials. She earned a berth to the Champion of Champions-G1 in the Mildred N. Vessels Memorial Handicap, again with a margin of 3/4-length.
“She’s been out here about 60 days,” Aleman said after the Vessels win. “We prepped her, we worked her just to let her get hold of the track because she had never been here in California. She liked it. She worked really good.”
Aleman wheeled her back in the Las Damas Handicap-G2, and she scored again, this time by a nose. It was an even better performance than it looked because she was bumped from behind three times.
“She broke nicely—like always—but she got knocked around,” said Aleman. “She got her hind end taken out of her, and she could not get going right away. She finally pulled away. This mare has a lot of heart. She knows how to win.”
In a very tough Champion of Champions, Curls Happy Wagon finished unplaced. But she came right back in the new year with a third
in the Charger Bar Handicap-G1, an excellent effort after she got bumped at the start.
