Eagles Fly Higher traveled far in 2020, and it paid off. He competed at five racetracks in five different states, winning three graded stakes and being named Champion Aged Stallion.
Casey Black trained Eagles Fly Higher for Darling Farms, which prior to the 2020 racing season acquired the colt from Vernon Harman Jr. and Robert T. “Tom” Moudy III, who bred him in Oklahoma. Black credited Dan Darling with much of Eagles Fly Higher’s success when he spoke at the awards ceremony.
“We picked and chose where we were going, and it seemed like it paid off for us,” Black said. “Hopefully, we can do it again next year.”
After one early start at Los Alamitos, where Eagles Fly Higher had competed during the last part of 2019, the colt moved to Black’s care. At Remington Park, Eagles Fly Higher ticked off consecutive graded victories.
Having not won since 2018, Eagles Fly Higher went off at 32-1, the second-longest shot on the board, in the March 21 Eastex Stakes-G2. He broke like a shot from the outside, never gave up the lead, and scored by
1 1/2-lengths under jockey Mario Delgado. In the April 18 Sooner State Stakes-G1, against 7-5 favorite Apocalyptical Jess, Eagles Fly Higher was the second choice at 4-1. With Delgado aboard, Eagles Fly Higher again went right to the front, coming to the wire 2-lengths in front.
Second in the Bank of America Canterbury Park Championship Challenge-G3, Eagles Fly Higher traveled to Iowa where he qualified to the Challenge Championships by taking the Bank
of America Prairie Meadows Championship Challenge-G2. Cristian Esqueda piloted him to a 1 3/4-length win as the 9-10 favorite.
Eagles Fly Higher completed the year with two placings in Grade 1 company at Albuquerque.
He ran second by a neck in the Downs at Albuquerque Fall Championship and then third in the Bank of America Challenge Championship.
