When Dean Frey retired the mare Shez Jess Toxic after she became a graded stakes winner and earned $235,296, Billy Smith suggested to Frey that she be bred to FDD Dynasty. That pairing produced Danjer, Champion Aged Horse and Champion Aged Gelding of 2020.
Frey bred and trains Danjer, owning him with Smith and Downtime Enterprises LLC.
At the awards ceremony, Smith recalled how he bought into Danjer, saying, “When I saw
he was a runner, I called Dean and said, ‘Dean, bring this horse to Ruidoso. We’re going to do something with him.’ I saw it happen, and I appreciated what Dean did. It worked out.”
It certainly did. At two at Ruidoso in
2018, Danjer won a trial for the All American Futurity-G1 and the All American Juvenile Stakes. At three in 2019, Danjer captured the First Down Dash Stakes and finished second in the Ruidoso Derby-G1. For his championship season, Danjer competed at Ruidoso once, finishing second by a neck in the All American Gold Cup-G1.
After winning one of two races at Remington Park in his native Oklahoma, Danjer traveled
to Canterbury Park. Under Cody Smith, who piloted him throughout the year, he prevailed by a neck in the Bank of America Canterbury Park Championship Challenge-G3.
“He likes to train; he’s a professional,” said Frey.
Prior to 2020, Danjer had never competed at Albuquerque. He is now undefeated there, winning both of his starts in game fashion.
Favored at 7-5 in the Downs at Albuquerque Fall Championship-G1, Danjer broke behind several others from the outside post position. He made up ground, though, and scored by a neck.
In Danjer’s final start of the year, the Bank of America Challenge Championship-G1, he once again drew the outside. Breaking a step slowly, he exploded late to grab the win by a head.
For his efforts, not only did Danjer earn his two championships, he was also named a Supreme Racehorse at the awards ceremony.
