Madewell has benefited from getting a late start in his racing career. His owners/breeders, the husband and wife team of Ray and Davy Madewell, took their veterinarian’s advice and gave the gelding plenty of time. As a result, Madewell didn’t race at two. But he has come on strong and at age six in 2020 was voted Distance Champion.
The couple bred Madewell in Oklahoma, where they live in Ringling.
“I own the mare, I bred him, I foaled him, and raised him,” said Ray.
Madewell won two races at three, one race
at four, and one at five. But he earned plenty
of checks in other races. He finished third and second in consecutive runnings of the Will Rogers Distance Challenge in 2017 and 2018. The following year he won the Remington Park Distance Championship-G2, ran second in three other stakes, and third in the AQHA Cox Ranch Distance Challenge Championship-G1.
Madewell had an even better season ahead
of him in 2020 when put in the care of trainer Bernard Baca. He tuned up at Remington, running second in the Remington Park Distance Challenge-G2 after finishing third in his trial. A wide trip cost him a placing in the Remington Park Distance Championship-G2, but he wouldn’t lose again the rest of the year.
Baca took Madewell to Albuquerque,
where the gelding thrived. As the 3-10 favorite, Madewell won his trial for the Downs at Albuquerque Distance Challenge-G2 by 1 1/2-lengths. He went off as the 1-2 favorite in the final and surged late to win by the same margin.
Madewell closed out the season in the AQHA Distance Challenge Championship-G1. Benito Baca, the trainer’s son, ably substituted after regular rider Jorge Bourdieu became injured on another horse. Fifth early while saving ground around the turn, Madewell angled outside of the two leaders in the stretch and pulled away for a 2 3/4-length victory.
