A journey from Canada to Oklahoma during winter is never easy. But in the time of the pandemic, it was even more difficult because of the restrictions Canada had put in place. That didn’t deter Wesley Oulton, however, from attending the ceremony when his Eyesa Timber won as Canadian Champion.
Janet VanBebber noted that Oulton hasn’t missed an awards ceremony for 10 years. He was especially proud to be there this time because he has been completely involved with Eyesa Timber’s campaign. Oulton bred the gelding in Alberta, Canada, and owns and trains him.
A very emotional Oulton gratefully accepted the award.
“I’d like to thank mostly my wife (Susen),” Oulton said, choking back tears. “She’s at home foaling out. For us, this is our life. We have lots of interests, but the horses consume us. She insisted I be here because we had a small chance to win it this year.”
Eyesa Timber descends from a family nurtured by the late Jens L. List Jr. and the late John Sperry, both major breeders in California. He is a son of First Timber out of California-bred Eyesa Perry.
Oulton started Eyesa Timber at Remington under the tutelage of Durk Peery. Someone could have claimed the gelding for $15,000 as he ran second at 36-1. But they missed their chance, and Eyesa Timber hasn’t been risked for a tag since.
Eyesa Timber ran second in his trial for the Heritage Place Futurity. At Canterbury Park, he won a trial for the MQHRA Stallion Auction Futurity and then ran fifth in the final after ducking out at the start.
Oulton brought Eyesa Timber home, and the gelding never lost in his native country. Now trained by his owner/breeder, Eyesa Timber trounced the competition by 1 3/4-lengths in his trial for the Alberta Bred Futurity at Century Downs and added the final by a 1/2-length.
In his last start of the 2020 season, Eyesa Timber stormed home once again by 1 3/4-lengths, this time in the Canada Cup Futurity-G3, also at Century Downs. He was the 4-5 favorite in that race, earning himself a championship in the process.
