Juanito Y Danny, the 2020 Mexican Champion, has been highly regarded throughout his entire life.
Cuadra La Presita, which bred the gelding in Mexico, stands the sire, Danny Cartel. And when the breeder offered Juanito Y Danny at the Subasta Selecta Sale at the Hipodromo de las Americas, he topped the sale at 1.4 million pesos ($69,328).
The California-bred mare Toles is the dam of Juanito Y Danny. The mare is out of the multiple winner Check Your Choice.
Anselmo Aguilar of Cuadra La Presita bred the sire, Danny Cartel, and raced him at Los Alamitos in the name of Cuadra La Presita. Danny Cartel won twice and ran third in the 2010 Golden State Derby-G1.
“I feel very proud that this Champion was bred and raised on our land,” said Aguilar. “I think this is something that every racehorse breeder aspires to.”
“We always thought that Juanito Y Danny was going to be a great runner because of his dam,” Aguilar continued. “All of her foals shine with the cross of sire Danny Cartel. She has already had other racing greats like Soliat and Juanita Cartel.”
Rancho El Suspiro purchased Juanito Y Danny, who won three of four races during his championship season with the Subasta Selecta Futurity-RG2 sealing his championship.
“I am very proud to have a colt like Juanito Y Danny and to have obtained this recognition, since it is something that as horsemen we wish to achieve,” says owner Juan Baldovino.
When asked about the gelding’s demeanor, Juan said, “Since we started to train the colt, he always cooperated and showed a lot of potential. He is a very intelligent horse, he is a foal that was born to run.”
Juanito Y Danny, who qualified the third fastest, was ridden by jockey Leonardo Vidana. They came from fifth early in the 350-yard race to score by 3/4-length in :17.05.
Ismael Ayala trained Juanito Y Danny, and others who helped along the way included Juan Carlos Aceves and Jose Guadalupe Garcia.
