Fantastic Fly Apollo, an elegant gray colt, took Brazil by storm in 2020, and thus he was named the year’s South American Champion.
Ademir Jose Rorato bred the son of Fantastic Corona Jr out of the Eyesa Special mare Flyapolloeyesa Br. Because he was foaled in the Southern Hemisphere, Fantastic Fly Apollo was born July 11, 2017. Rivail Rosa trained Fantastic Fly Apollo for owner Ademire Jose Rorato.
Rafael Celeste, who knows the connections, accepted the championship award on their behalf.
“This means a whole lot for them,” said Celeste. “It’s a dream come true. More than that, it’s a payoff for all the hard work and the dedication they put to the horses for all of those years.”
Fantastic Fly Apollo won six of his eight races in 2020, and he finished second in the other two. Second in the GP Brazilian Futurity after leading early, Fantastic Fly Apollo captured the Sorocaba Futurity at 320 meters, defeating his two rivals handily by a length. In against four others in the Brasil II Triplice Coroa at 365 meters, he won again by a similar margin.
His final start of the year came in the Dec. 19 Campeao dos Campeoes (Champion of Champions), also at 365 meters. This time he faced five others, but the result was the same. Drawn into post two, he again vanquished them by 1-length.
Rorato bred Fantastic Fly Apollo from a line of Brazilian mares. The sire, Fantastic Corona Jr, ran second in the 2009 All American Derby-G1 and Los Alamitos Winter Derby-G1, and he finished third in the 2009 Southern California Derby-G1. Paul Jones trained Fantastic Corona Jr to earnings of $541,896. Fantastic Fly Apollo’s dam is an unraced mare by 2-time Champion Eyesa Special.
His third dam is Kathy Flyer, a half-sister to stakes placed Illogical Illusion, who finished third in the Flinthills Futurity, and Never Home, who ran third in the Kansas Bred Derby.
His fourth dam is Gonna Be Rich, a finalist in the Northeast Kansas Futurity-G2 and Flinthills Futurity. She is also a half-sister to Dazzle Demon, winner of the Northeast Kansas Futurity.
