QROOI Distance Stakes Series 1
SPY FOR THE SENATE
by Danny Camp
It’s been nearly a year since Spy For The Senate visited the winner’s circle, but he got his picture taken
after winning the $15,877 QROOI Distance Series Stakes at Ajax Downs on July 8.
The bay colt broke from the 6-post in the lead under jockey Ed Walton, and they were a neck in front midway down the stretch. They continued
to lengthen their lead, crossing the wire a 1/2-length in front. Trained
by Jason Pascoe, Spy For The Senate completed the 350 yards in :17.732, good for a 95 speed index.
The colt scored the $7,057 first place check for owner Milena Kwiecien, which brings his total
bankroll to $90,501 and his race record now stands at 24-6(2)-6(3)- 1(0). Spy For The Senate also won the Alex Picov Memorial Futurity in 2018 and was a runner-up in last year’s Alex Picov Memorial Derby at Ajax Downs and in the Gopher State Derby at Canterbury Park.
Mary Hainline bred Spy For The Senate out of winner Corona Spy. She has produced 100% win- ners from two starters. Spy For The Senate is her first stakes win- ner. The second dam is winner I Spy A Fly, who was third in the Refrigerator Handicap.
Not Whistlin Dixie (Strong Hope-Ramblin Strawfly) ran a
steady and even race to bank second place money under jockey Tony Phillips for owner/trainer Amanda McCormack. The mare has won five races from 10 starts.
Maryland Magic (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Purley Un Social) was third under Helen Vanek for Milena Kwiecien and trainer Jason Pascoe. The horse was 2nd in the Picov Maturity one week prior to this race.
Elenorr (Mr Jess Tex- Squincheyes) finished in fourth place and was followed by Chicksdigmymoneybags (Chicks Regard-Aaneta) and Jess A Deal (Dealagame-Jess Marcy)
