Jess Carolinas Award, the fast-
est qualifier from his Oct. 12
trial heat for the $41,621 Ontario Sires Stakes Derby at Ajax Downs, returned in the main event on Oct. 26 and notched the first stakes victory of his career.
With jockey Cory Spataro in the irons, Jess Carolinas Award broke alertly and grabbed the lead at the first call of the 350-yard test. He was pressured throughout but was never headed in the lane. At the finish, he defeated race favorite Shaken by a head in a determined effort, stopping the timer in :18.285.
The win marked the fourth life- time score for the bay gelding. Owned
and bred by Rick Crispi and trained by Tom Dunlap, Jess Carolinas Award improved his bankroll to $45,559 with the $16,649 winner’s share of the purse added to his coffers.
Crispi bred Jess Carolinas Award out of winner Jess Carolina. She has produced 100% money earners from four starters. Jess Carolinas Award is her first stakes winner.
Shaken (Look At Magics Form- Shake Pretty Baby) was second under Cassandra Jeschke for owner and trainer Chantelle Bourgeois. Shaken is now multiple stakes- placed and had won two in a row before this second-place finish in the Ontario Sires Stakes Derby.
Down In Carolina (Azure Down There-Dinah Carolina) and jockey Ismael Mosqueira finished third for owner Amelie Aubut and trainer Carol McIntyre. The sorrel gelding is still seeking the initial win of his career.
Rowdy And Bodacious (Bodacious Jess-Make Us A Miracle), Pretty Runaway (Winners Award-Pretty
Jane Perry), A Lone Hand (Azure Down There-Special Royal Takeon), Hanover Hill Chalsee (Make Out Artist-Secret Sugarwoman), Princesss Leia (Look At Magics Form-Katies Award) and Jess Gunnin (Mr Jess Tex- Cerveza) completed the order of finish. Shock The Clocker was scratched.
