One of the big responsibilities in the Quarter Horse breeding business is stallion ownership. The stallion
owner’s goal is to provide a stallion that will contribute to the industry, filling the need for good performers whether in flat racing or barrel racing. He does this for his own breeding program or as a commercial breeder, as that is how he makes his living.
The stallion owner has to have several factors contribute to the success of their stallion. These factors include: providing athletic ability and speed, essentially through proven performance for himself and his foals; carrying good conformation with form to function in mind to fit the event competing in; pedigree strength from top to bottom; and good disposition, enhancing training and performance. It was these factors that came out while researching the Speedhorse Barrel Stallion Register cover stallion Eddie Stinson.
Eddie Stinson is a 2003 son of Dash Ta Fame and out of a race winning mare named
Casino Lights by Sixarun. He was bred
by Paul Whissel of Las Vegas, Nevada and was transferred to the Ace of Spade Ranch
of Stephenville, Texas, as a yearling and they raced him throughout his race career. He was sold in 2008 to Chad Hart, who formed a partnership with Dr. Larry Findley. He was later sold that year to Victory Farms where he stood at stud until Cody and Luann Johnson of the Twisted J Ranch Performance Horses bought him.
We will let Luann Johnson fill us in on some family history and how they came to buy Eddie Stinson. “I have been barrel racing my whole life. My parents raised their own horses. My dad was Bill Bradley. He was an AQHA Judge and participated in both racing and performance. They used to run horses on the track when I was young. So, the AQHA racing and rodeo has always been in my background.
“We were fortunate to have parents who knew good horses and always had us mounted. We never were the people who
went out and spent a crazy amount of money for anything to ride, but we always had good horses because we made them ourselves.”
They made their own good horses
with a fine breeding program. “Our first stud when I was very young was a Triple Chick grandson that was Top AAA at three distances,” Luann said. “His name was Scat Chick by Scooper Chick by Triple Chick. He was home bred. When I got older, we had a stud that was Mito Paint bred and he was AAA at several distances. His name was Twistomite and he was homebred. So, I had speed from the very beginning.”
Like anyone in the horse business, Luann had an ideal in mind to set her standard. She then recalled the mare that set that standard for her, “One of my favorite of all was a full sister to Twistomite that I trained on barrels myself. I won everything on her and then I lost her. I was coming
out of college and lost her to colic. She was the kind you don’t get very often, and she
