Burnett, and he was the son of the ranch founder Samuel Burk Burnett. It was Samuel Burk Burnett who formed the base of the ranch in the 1870’s when he purchased the 6666’s brand, and the cattle that carried that brand then became the Four Sixes Ranch we know today.
The ownership of the Burnett ranch holdings owned by Samuel Burk Burnett have come down through the years with
the family ownership intact. When
Burnett died, he left his ranch holdings to his granddaughter Anne Burnett Tandy. When that happened, the day-to-day ranch operations were turned over to a trustee and that format continued for many years. But Miss Anne was always an integral part of that management team.
When we look at the history of the Burnett Ranch and its famous Four Sixes Division, we see a cattle ranch built on the history of Texas, and the outstanding cow horses the ranch produced to run the operation. The ranch implemented a herd improvement program in the mid 1930’s under the management of John Burns, the ranch trustee, and George Pumphrey,
The recent announcement that the famed Burnett Ranches of Guthrie, Texas, was to be sold drew a lot of interest in the Quarter Horse world. When Anne Marion, the longtime matriarch passed away, she requested that the ranch be sold. Little Anne, as she was called in her youth, was the daughter of Anne Burnett Tandy (Miss Anne), who was the daughter of Tom L.
the Four Sixes manager. They started the program by assembling a broodmare band that became the foundation of the breeding program today. We see that foundation through mares known as the Miss Tommy mares. Later we see the same thing with
the Triangle Mares associated with the Triangle Ranch of Iowa Park, Texas, that was individually owned by Tom L. Burnett and later inherited by Anne Burnett Tandy.
The Four Sixes used several stallions in the early years, but four stand out in Tom (Scooter), Buggins, King O’Neill II and Besom. These four stand out because of
their ties to racing with Tom (Scooter), a Quarter Horse purchased by Tom Burnett off a racetrack in Oklahoma. He was the sire of the Miss Tommy mares. The other three stallions being Thoroughbreds that came to the ranch as army remount stallions from the program that allowed ranchers to improve their horses through the use of purebred stallions. These three stallions were the sires of the second-generation mares. So from
the beginning, speed is a key ingredient in the selection of stallions in the use of the Thoroughbred we see.
Longtime matriarch of 6666 Ranch, Anne Burnett Marion.
