With the naming of Pumphrey as trustee, we see a move by the Burnett Ranch to be more actively involved in racing. Peggy Toro was one of the horses brought into the racing program. This mare was trained by Ted Wells Jr. She won the 1964 Sunland Park Fall Futurity. Wells was a former employee of the ranch who pursued a career as a racehorse trainer.

The trend of using stallions with speed continued with horses like Joe Hancock, the largely undefeated racehorse; Grey Badger II, a racing son of Midnight Jr; Cee Bars, a AAA rated son of Three Bars; and Top Bracket, a AAA rated son of Top Deck - these represent the Quarter Horse in the scheme of things.
