in Pea Jay Jet, winner of the 1980 Buttons And Bow Stakes and second in the 1980
All American Derby-G1. The second stakes winner out of Pea Jacket is Easy Approach, winner of the 1981 Vandy’s Flash Handicap. Pea Jacket’s daughter Sages Pillow Talk shows only two starts with one second,
but she has a speed index of 102. She is the dam of Easy Conversation, winner of $534,854 and a stakes winner of 11 races with nine seconds and two thirds. He won four stakes from June 14, 1986, to August 9, 1986, in the Go Josie Go Handicap, Los Alamitos Invitational Championship-G1, Chicado V Handicap-G3 and Go Man Go Handicap-G1.
Count Fleet was the sire of Blue One. This great racehorse was the 1943 Triple Crown winner with his Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes wins. He was the undefeated Horse of the Year and the Champion Three-Year-Old Colt.
The race career of Count Fleet began with 15 starts at two. He had 10 wins, 4 seconds and 1 third that year. His races at two were run from 5 furlongs to a mile and sixteenth. When we look at his races, we see that 11 of them were 6 furlongs or less. It took him three tries to break his maiden after reportedly racing erratically. He was second in his first two starts at 5 and 5 1/2-furlongs. He broke his maiden in his third race going 5 1/2-furlongs in a time of 1:06 winning by 4 1/2-lengths. He came back in the Army & Navy allowance race to win the 5 1/2-furlong race in a time of 1:05 4/5 by 5-lengths. He then came in second in the East View Stake at 5 3/4-furlongs. His next start came in the 5 3/4-furlong Wakefield Stakes where he won in the time of 1:07 4/5 by 4-lengths. These last three races were at Empire City Race Park and then he went to Washington Park to win a 6-furlong allowance by a neck
in a time of 1:13. He was then second
in the Washington Park Futurity. The reported time for the race was 1:12. He went back to Aqueduct in a 6-furlong Mars Purse, an allowance race in a time
of 1:12. He started in an allowance race
at Belmont Park going the 6-furlongs in 1:10 3/5, winning by 2 1/2-lengths. He then finished second in the Futurity at Belmont Park in a time of 1:15 1/5 at 6 1/2-furlongs. He won three more stakes at two, including the Champagne Stakes, the Pimlico Futurity and the Walden Stakes to be named the Champion Two-Year- Old Colt. He never went less than a mile after those last three races and was never defeated again all the way through his three-year-old campaign.
Count Fleet’s sire record shows 434 foals with 351 starters, 267 winners and 39 stakes winners. His foals earned $7,090,359. His stakes horses include Counterpoint, the 1951 Horse of the Year and winner of the Belmont Stakes; Count Turf, the winner of the
1951 Kentucky Derby; and Kiss Me Kate, winner of the Alabama Stakes and the 1951 Champion Three-Year-Old Filly. Needless to say, Count Fleet was the leading sire in 1951.
Reigh Count was the sire of Count Fleet. Reigh Count was owned by John D. Hertz Sr., the founder of Hertz Rent A Car and Yellow Cab. Reigh Count was the 1928 Kentucky Derby winner. Hertz bought Reigh Count, but many of the Hertz horses were bred by Mrs. Fannie Hertz and Count Fleet was one of them. Reigh Count had 27 starts with 12 wins and four seconds earning $180,795. His stakes wins include the Walden Handicap and the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes at two. He won the Kentucky Derby, Miller Stakes, Huron Handicap, Saratoga Cup, the Lawrence Realization Stakes and the Jockey Club Gold Cup at three. He went
to England at four to win the Coronation Cup and he was second in the Ascot Gold Cup.
Reigh Count became the sire of horses that won $3,311,789. From 290 foals,
he sired 256 starters, 205 winners and 22 stakes winners. His stakes winners consist of Count Arthur (bred by Mr. Hertz),
a multiple stakes winner including the Jockey Gold Cup; Triplicate, winner of the Hollywood Gold Cup; and Henpecker, winner of the Golden Gate Derby.
Reigh Count was sired by Sunreigh
by Sundridge, who is by Amphion and out of the great Sierra. Sierra was sired by Springfield, who twice won the 6-furlong July Cup. He was a noted source of speed. The dam of Sunreigh was Sweet Briar by St Frusquin. The dam of Reigh Count was Contessina by Count Schomberg, and Contessina was out of Pitti by St Frusquin. This gives Reigh Count a breeding pattern of 3x3 to St Frusquin,
a multiple stakes winner of races like the 1-mile 2000 Guineas at three. He also won the 6-furlong Middle Park Stake and the 7-furlong Dewhurst Stakes at two, showing his speed. He was sired by St Simon and out of Isabel by Plebeian.
Quickly was the dam of Count Fleet. She was a race mare with 81 starts, 32 wins, 14 seconds and 13 thirds. She earned $21,530. Her sire was Haste, winner of the 1925 Grand Union Hotel Stakes and the Saratoga, both races run at 6-furlongs. Haste was sired by Maintenant and out of Miss Malaprop by Meddler. The dam of Miss Malaprop is Correction, a full sister to Domino. She won 38 of her 122 starts with 35 seconds and 22 thirds. She was a noted sprinter and a multiple stakes winner, including the 6-furlong Toboggan Handicap, which is now a Grade 3 stakes race.
