When some of the biggest names in the Quarter Horse racing industry are drawn
to the same stallion, you can bet that horse
is something quite special. Favorite Cartel, who is featured on the cover of our 2021 Speedhorse Stallion Register, is a 2007
brown stallion who has proven himself to
be the most deserving of this honor. In only six crops to race, Favorite Cartel’s progeny include three Champions and their earnings reached over $22.3 million, with $6.1 million banked in 2020 alone.
Favorite Cartel was bred by Paul Jones and Thompson Racing Inc. in California. Favorite Cartel is by multiple Champion
sire Favorite Trick TB, who was also a Champion runner himself. Favorite Trick
was the 1997 Horse of the Year, making
him the first two year old in 25 years to
be given this honor. Favorite Trick is
the sire of over $22.1 million from both Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse runners. Favorite Cartel is out of the Corona Cartel mare Shenoshercorona, An All-Time Leading Dam of ROM who has produced 28 foals,
23 starters and 13 winners/Register of Merit earners. Her additional runners include
stakes winners Shescheckinumout ($105,075) and Hospitaliti (2020, $56,716) and stakes placers Henoshersecret ($170,051), Hes Regal ($88,493) and Slump Buster ($13,416).
Favorite Cartel’s third dam, Lil Bit Rusty, is a stakes winner as well as An All-Time Leading Dam of ROM. Lil Bit Rusty is the dam of World Champion/AQHA Supreme Race Horse Whosleavingwho ($1,334,842) and four additional blacktype runners.
From a family like this, it was not surprising that Favorite Cartel was destined for greatness.
Racing from the age of two to four,
the colt won nine of 25 outs, including
the $353,500 AQHA Championship Challenge-G1, $72,630 Los Alamitos Championship Challenge-G2 and the $20,000 Paul B. Ford Memorial Handicap. Favorite Cartel was also third in the Rainbow Futurity-G1 and the SLM Big Daddy Stakes, fourth in the All American Futurity-G1, fifth in the Los Alamitos
Super Derby-G1, Rainbow Derby-G1
and Robert L. Boniface Los Alamitos Invitational Championship-G1, and was
a finalist the All American Derby-G1, Champion of Champions-G1, Remington Park Invitational Championship-G1 and Championship at Sunland Park-G1. Favorite Cartel was named the 2010 California High- Point Distance Horse, and he was a leading money earner in 2009, 2010 and 2011. He earned $607,669 on the track before moving to the stallion barn.
