The Prize Classic
UNDERDOG
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Speedhorse
Traditionally, open races for two-year-
old Quarter Horses have been between participants imported from the United States. During this race, although four out of the five participants were U.S. bred, the one of Mexican origin emerged the winner. The contest was held on April 30, at 300 yards with a prize of $278,200 pesos ($15,144 U.S. approx.).
The runners were inexperienced, except for the gelding Keanu Pat SJ with a fifth-place finish in his only start.
At the start of the race, Underdog (#2) charged Keanu Pat SJ (#1) twice, but soon Underdog clearly assumed command under jockey Huberclein Gómez Mendoza with no rival to come close to his lead. He reached the finish line with a 1 1/4-length victory over Keanu Pat SJ, setting a time of :15.49 for a 79 speed index.
Once again, the horse bred by Mr. Abelardo Gallegos was present in the winner’s circle,
as Underdog is the son of the stallion Krash Cartel and out of the mare Missouri Chick by
Separatist. Underdog was
presented at the 2022 Select
Yearling Auction held at the
Hipódromo de Las Américas
(Hip #121), where he was sold
for $320,000 pesos ($15,808 U.S. approx.) and was purchased by the Cuadra 3 Amigos team, for which he is currently running.
It should be noted that Underdog is the third runner from Rancho Los Potrillos, owned by Mr. Abelardo Gallegos, to win an added money race in the current season at the Hipódromo de Las Américas Racetrack: first it was La Corona Eagle (Mexico Derby), followed by Blue Krash (Garanones Derby), and now Underdog.
José Miguel González Osorio, who is the colt’s trainer, expressed the following, “Despite his young age, he is a very mature colt; that is why Mr. Saúl Martínez, owner of the stable, gave me the confidence to enter him knowing that in this race traditionally the participants are imported. But we trusted him and Huberclein Gómez to put
it together, and the result could not have been better, reflecting the work of all of us who make up the 3 Amigos team.”
“It is a blessing to have specimens and patterns of this quality,” José
Miguel concluded gratefully.
In this way, Underdog opened his earnings
account with 139,100 pesos ($7,572 U.S. approx.), the winner’s share from his first victory.
Second place went to Keanu Pat SJ (Jet Black Patriot-Wagy) with jockey Fortunato Gomez for Cuadra Edy-Pat SJ and trainer Epifanio Carrasco Sandoval.
Third place went to the colt Space Cowboi (Flying Cowboy 123-Una Hero) with César Guadalupe Cervantes in command. He is the property of to the Cuadra Leny and is trained by Gustavo Mario Márquez Hernández.
Followed by Runaway Bravisima (Duponte- Bravisima) and Prince Viente (Lota PYC- Viente TB).
