Garañones Derby
BLUE KRASH
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Speedhorse
The qualifying races for this Derby were held on April 9, with the participation of 31 three-year-old horses bred in Mexico. All met the established eligibility conditions, including the negative result of the hair test, which came into effect for three-year-olds starting this season.
During these trials, the dapple Blue Krash stood out with the fastest time of :17.262, followed by Azal Storm (:17.349) and EC Apollicalprime. All of them ran in the second trial, which was the most productive, since in it O She Left also qualified with the seventh best time (:17.461).
The final was held two weeks later with a purse of $1,279,892 pesos ($69,993 U.S. approx.), and nine of the qualifiers participated due to
the withdrawal of Regalo CC, from Finca La Soledad. The betting preferences leaned towards the entry of Cuadra Santa Elena, with SE Carver Cruzan and SE Wave Tres.
In the finals, Azal Storm (#2) drifted left and made contact with SE Wave Tres (#1A). Day Cartel made a quick start from the 1-gate and took the lead along the inside rail, leading the pack in the 300 yard event, where the power and
speed of SE Carver Cruzan, Blue Krash and O She Left came out on top.
The race concluded with no
clear winner in sight. Horses
and riders returned, and the
event was unique: the three leaders walked for several minutes in front of the stands while the judges issued their verdicts based on the photo finish and the teletimer recording. Judges favored Blue Krash, with SE Carver Cruzan and O
She Left in second and third, respectively; the race chart indicated :17.38 (SI 85) for the three mentioned for the 350 yards, so the race was decided by thousandths of a second.
The reception in the winners’ circle was headed by Constantino Trejo, owner of the colt and the Cuadra Par de Reyes, who together with the jockey Osvaldo Cervantes and the trainer Hugo Estrada López received congratulations and recognition from Adriana Gómez Barnola, Manager of the Mexican Association of Quarter Horse Breeders and Horsemen, and José Mauricio Dorantes, Operations Manager of the Hipódromo de Las Américas Racetrack.
Blue Krash was bred by Abelardo Gallegos, owner of the stallion Krash Cartel and the mare Santa Aguerrida (by Aguerrido), who consigned him to the 2021 Select Yearling
Auction where he was purchased for $170,000.00 pesos ($8,163 U.S. approx.) when acquired by his current owner.
He debuted and won a maiden on March
27, 2022, and in his next start he won his trial and qualified for the Mexico Futurity final, in which he had a bad start and finished in ninth place but was promoted to eighth. After winning an allowance, he qualified to the final of the Garanones Futurity where he finished fourth. Later he participated in the trials of the Subasta Select Futurity, but his time did not allow him to qualify for the final or the consolation.
On February 23, he began his current campaign, winning his trial to qualify for the Mexico Derby, in which he finished in second place 1/2-length behind the LA Corona Eagle, who also hails from Rancho Los Potrillos stables. In his next race, he qualified with the best time for the Garanones Derby, with the result reported here.
In summary, his record is 7-1-1 in 13 starts, with earnings that already exceed 1.5 million pesos.
Second placed SE Carver Cruzan (Wave Carver-JA Jess Cruzan) had a spectacular career with jockey Alejandro Gómez Díaz. He belongs to the Santa Elena Stable, where he is trained by his breeder, Joaquín Ramón Peláez – Cortez.
The surprising O She Left (The Ocean King- She Left You), who was the second least favorite in the odds, finished in third place under jockey Miguel Ángel Rodríguez for owner Cuadra Jojola R. and trainer Joaquín Ramón Peláez-Cortez. She was bred by Rancho Hacienda.
Day Cartel (Krash Cartel-Day Drink), Unodk (Bullish One-Corona Dot Com), EC Apollicalprime (BP Apolliticalpolicy-Carrion My Secret), Azal Storm (Red Storm Cat-Azalways Cajun), Teller Storm Cat (Red Storm Cat-Teller Honeys Here) and SE Wave Tres (Wave Carver- Tellem Jamie) completed the order of finish.
Blue Krash wins the Garañones Derby under jockey Osvaldo Cervantes on April 23.
