ROMAN CHAPA
(July 27) - Texas-based jockey Roman Chapa, 50, passed away in San Antonio, Texas. Chapa was injured in a race in Georgia in March, suffering collapsed lungs and other injuries. He spent 45 days in a medically induced coma
and they enjoyed success as owners and trainers at the Colorado track. Norman passed away
in 2002. Their love for horse racing lives on through their grandsons Stetson and Ramsye Mitchell, who now train racehorses.
OCTOBER
DAN MOON
(Oct. 16) - Longtime Idaho horseman Danny Alvin (Dan) Moon passed away following a battle with idiomatic pulmonary fibrosis. Dan served in

and then returned home on July 2. Chapa has ridden Thoroughbred earners of over $25.9 million and Quarter Horse earners of over $1.7 million, including 2011 and 2012 Champion Prospect To The Top.
AUGUST
TOMMIE TURNER
(Aug. 4) - Quarter Horse racing enthusiast Tommie Ross Turner Jr. passed away at the age of 68. Growing up in Frisco, Texas, and attending Texas A&M on a rodeo scholarship, Tommie
set himself on a course to be a successful rancher and entrepreneur, building a large advertising firm in Dallas. In 2009 Tommie bought his first racehorse in Jess Send Me. With this horse he went on to do the one thing all Quarter Horse racing enthusiasts dream of - making the finals in the 2011 $2.4 million All American Futurity-G1, finishing second to Ochoa. Turner went on
to earn over $1 million as an owner. Tommie enjoyed spending time outdoors, involved himself with the local youth hunting community, taught hunter safety and did charity work.
MARILYN K. WHITE
(Aug. 17) - Colorado native and horse racing enthusiast Marilyn K. White, 80, passed
away. Born on December 30, 1940, in Meade, Kansas, her family moved to Kit Carson, Colorado, where she grew up on their Ford and Fell Hat Bar Ranch. She met Norman White and they married when she was a senior in high school in 1957. Marilyn worked as an EMT and she and her husband raised their family in the ranch and rodeo lifestyle while fostering
69 youths over the years. They were long time supporters of the horse races at Arapahoe Park,
MATTHEW TELFORD
(Aug. 30) - Matthew Lane Telford “Tilly”, 56, of Twins Falls, Idaho, passed away with his loving wife Dr. Melinda Dawson Roche by his side. Matt was born in Idaho Falls in 1964. He was passionate about his work in the cattle industry
as a buyer. His first love was feeding cattle, and
he had an eye for seeing potential in “plain” cattle and feeding them up to make a quality product. Matt also was an avid team roper, competing in USTRC, PRCA and amateur rodeo events, and enjoyed sponsoring up and coming rodeo athletes. Matt purchased a yearling Quarter Horse for his wife, and that spurred their shared love of horse racing. Telford was a loving individual who valued his relationships built with friends and family.
JOSE GUZMAN
(Aug. 30) - Longtime Texas horseman Jose Ernesto Guzman, 60, passed away. Jose experienced much success in the construction industry, building his own construction business from the ground up and running the company for 30 years. One of his greatest passions was Quarter Horse racing. He was successful as an owner, winning 95 races with earners of over $3.9 million. Guzman won the 2019 All American Futurity with Mr Jess Jenkins, and also campaigned
other outstanding runners such as the winner
of the 2021 All American Derby-G1 Instygator ($1,268,239) and Remington Park Oklahoma Bred Futurity-RG1 winner Eye Work For You ($555,566). Guzman ventured into breeding Quarter Horses, standing Heritage Place Derby winner PYC Fun N Fancy at stud. He enjoyed visiting his ranch in Oklahoma, going to the casino with his wife Josefina, and with spending time with family and friends.
the Army National Guard from 1964-1970, was a Sergeant First Class in the 116th Engineer Battalion and served in Vietnam from 1969-1970. After his service, he worked for John Price & Associates from 1970-1979, moved to Bateman Hall Construction and then partnered as owner in the company
until he retired in 2010. Moon married his wife Connie in 1974 and they made their home in Ririe, Idaho, where they raised four children. Dan was a successful breeder and owner of Quarter Horses, racing them on the flat tracks and in chariot racing, with 76 firsts and the earners of $527,622. Perhaps his best horse was Jet Wings One ($81,360), winner of the 2021 Adequan Los Alamitos Derby Challenge and a finalist in the Adequan Challenge Championship-G3 on Oct. 23.
F. BERT LAMB
(Oct. 18) - Farrell Bert Lamb, 82, of Lexington, Oklahoma, passed away from complications of COVID-19. Born in Utah in 1939, he married his wife Aleen and they had one son and four daughters. Lamb worked as a building contractor and managed a Quarter Horse ranch. He recently qualified as an AQHA 50-year consecutive breeder of Quarter Horses.
SIMON ESCAMILLA
(Oct. 25) - Longtime breeder/owner/trainer Simon Escamilla, 81, passed away surrounded by his family in Texas. Born in 1940 in Beeville, Texas, Escamilla was married to Norma Villarreal. He was passionate about training and racing Quarter Horses, training/owning over $600,000 in earners, including his top money earner in Ecstatic Effort. Most recently, his homebred Ima Famous Eagle won a maiden claiming event by 2-lengths at Lone Star Park on Oct. 23.
