Barrel Racing Industry Alliance Formed
Leaders in the barrel racing industry and the American Quarter Horse Association have come together to form the Barrel Racing Industry Alliance (BRIA) to create
a unified presence for the sport on a national level. Leading event producers and organizations involved include Barrel Futurities of America, Better Barrel Races, Breeder’s Challenge, Future Fortunes, National Barrel Horse Association, West Coast Barrel Racing Association, Old Fort Days, Pink Buckle/Ruby Buckle, and Women’s Pro Rodeo Association. There has been significant growth within the sport of Barrel Racing in the last decade, drastically increasing the demand for quality horses both domestically and internationally. “The unprecedented formation of this alliance will no doubt be a pivotal event in the advancement of barrel racing,” said Butch Wise, BRIA chairman and AQHA past president.
2022 WCRA To Fort Worth
The 2022 World Champions Rodeo Alliance (WRCA) and Professional Bull Riders (PBR) on Oct. 11 announced that the Women’s Rodeo World Championship (WRWC) - the largest payout event in the history of Women’s Rodeo, will move to Fort Worth, Texas, starting in May of 2022.The first three rounds of competition will be held at Cowtown Coliseum May 16-17, and the final two rounds will be held at Dickies Arena in conjunction with the PBR World Finals. The WRWC second annual event paid out $750,000 in 2021, crowning Champions in Barrel Racing, Team Roping and Breakaway Roping.
NBHA Youth & Teen World Champions
The 2021 NBHA Youth & Teen World Championship was held July 17-27 in Perry, Georgia. The Youth 1D World Championship winner was Pressley Green Porter aboard 2010 sorrel mare Little Jets A Blazin (Blazin Jetolena-Sissys Little Coin, Packin Sixes), and the Teen 1D World Championship winner was Summer Pauly aboard five-year-old gelding JL Little Wags (JL Dash Ta Heaven-Reneoni, Rene Dan Jet).
Million Dollar Barrel Sire Darkelly Laid to Rest
1994 black stallion Darkelly (First Down Kelly-Shawne Kate, Shawne Bug) was laid to rest at the age of 27
this year. Darkelly had a successful career on the track, making 24 starts with four wins, including the Grade 1 Blue Ribbon Futurity, finishing second nine times, and third twice with $89,200 in earnings and a 101 speed index. Bred in Oklahoma by Thomas L. Chambers out of the Shawne Bug mare Shawne Kate, Darkelly is one of two stakes winners out of his dam, the other being Valley Junction Futurity-G3 winner Ride My Wagon by PYC Paint Your Wagon. For Darkelly, his real claim to fame came after entering the breeding shed and his greatest influence was seen in his barrel performers. He is the sire of 109 runners in the arena who have earned $2.3 million in prize money, with an average money per performer of $21,082. His most notable earners
are three-time NFR qualifier CP Dark Moon, whose bankroll is $1,011,151, and three-time NFR qualifier Kellies Chick, who earned $325,283. Frozen semen is still available for ICSI through Littleton Equine Medical Center in Littleton, Colorado.
