The photo on page 172 shows APHA 2-Time World Champion Running Paint Horse Texas Hero (Raise A Jet-Breakaway Baby, Dash For Cash QH) winning the 1993 Speedhorse Paint & Appaloosa Futurity at Trinity Meadows. The stallion was ridden by Roy Brooks for owner/breeder Herbert Graham and trainer Lewis Wartchow.
Foaled in 1991, Texas Hero is by Champion Raise A Jet and out of unraced Breakaway Baby. Texas Hero is a full brother to APHA Champion 3-Year-Old Filly, Champion Aged Mare White Lace, APHA Champion 2 Year Old, Champion 2-Year-Old Colt Concho County and APHA Champion Running Breeding Stock 2 Year Old, Champion Running Breeding Stock 2-Year-Old Gelding Raise Cash.
Texas Hero began his career on the track as a two year old and raced until he was three. During that short time on the track, he made 22 starts with 18 victories and earnings of $100,402. He also set
a New Track Record at Remington Park. In addi- tion to the Speedhorse Paint & Appaloosa Futurity, Texas Hero also won the Oklahoma Paint Matu- rity, PSBA American Paint Classic Derby, APHA National Championship Race Series, Texas Bred Paint & Appaloosa Maturity, PSBA American Paint Classic Futurity and Pot O’ Gold Futurity. The tal- ented colt was named World Champion Running Paint Horse, Champion 2 Year Old and Champion 2-Year-Old Colt in 1993 and went on to repeat the following year with another World Champion Run- ning Paint Horse title as well as Champion 3 Year Old and Champion 3-Year-Old Colt.
After an incredibly successful career on the track, Texas Hero headed to the stud barn where he sired 289 starters with earnings of $3,375,442, which made him the first Paint Horse to reach the mile- stone of over $3 million in earners. He has sired 22 Champions and 48 stakes winners, making him the #5 all-time leading sire of Paint money earners.
Texas Hero spent most of his stud career at Lazy E Ranch in Oklahoma until the Grahams decided to sell the stallion. Buddy Albin attempted to purchase the horse when the Grahams dispersed but was unsuccessful. Two years later, Texas Hero was again sent to the sale ring where Buddy Albin purchased him, and he went to stand at Bowlan Farms. As the stallion aged, his fertility level began to diminish and the Bowlans and Buddy decided it was time to retire him and he returned to the Gra- hams to spend the remainder of his years.
This year’s World Champion Running Paint Horse is Smithworks, who was bred by Matt Whi- tekiller and is owned by Bryan Hawk.
