relaxed in the final, we’ll be just fine.’ You work hard to be in a race like this. It’s not just for me, but for everyone that’s involved with the horse.” That team includes Ignacio Montes, the groom for all three of Arrossa’s qualifier.
“He’s done a great job with them,” said Arrossa. “He lives with them and keeps them happy.”
Take A Swig Of This began his career at Remington Park. In his second start, he won his trial for the Heritage Place Futurity-G1 and ran second in the final, losing by just a nose. On the last day of 2022, Take A Swig Of This ran fifth in an allowance race in his Los Alamitos debut, following a poor start. He improved tremendously off that effort to win his trial and final of the Winter Derby.
“I knew it was critical for him to break,” Arrossa said. “I felt so good about him after the trials. All three of the horses were doing great after the trials. Physically, he started dappling. His hair coat looked outstanding.”
Arrossa, who won the 2022 Winter Derby with Scoops Dynasty, said that Take A Swig Of This would probably return to Oklahoma to continue his racing career. That is where Matt and Bendi Dunn of Dunn Ranch are based.
“Dunn Ranch has been super supportive and has invested a lot in this business,” Arrossa said, “not only with the racehorses, but with the breeding end and the barrel end. We have a number of these A Revenant horses that are really starting to mature as 3-year-olds.”
A son of A Revenant, Take A Swig Of This is out of the PYC Paint Your Wagon mare PYC
Prize Doll. Weetona Stanley bred the gelding in Texas. Matt Dunn bought Take A Swig Of This for $40,000 at the 2021 Heritage Place Yearling Sale. The 6666 Ranch consigned him for Stanley and Burnett Ranches LLC.
Unraced PYC Prize Doll is a full sister to multiple stakes winner Fast Prize Jordan and a half-sister to stakes winners Double Down and Fast Prize Robyn. PYC Prize Doll has produced five winners in 12 starters, including 2020 TQHA Classic Stakes-RG2 winner Jordan Eagle.
“Weetona Stanley and her son Fred have a breeding program that’s second to none,” Arrossa said. “We have a couple of 2 year olds for them that we’ll be bringing out to Los Alamitos.”
Jesus Ayala rode Good Wagon SA (Good Reason SA-Send Me This Wagon) to second for trainer Lindolfo Diaz and owner J. Francisco
Diaz. Good Wagon SA won two races last year and qualified for the Los Alamitos $2 Million Futurity-G1.
Normandy (A Revenant-Ms Casholene), owned by Ronnie Brooks Keller, trained by Roman Figueroa, and ridden by Jose Nicasio, finished third. The colt ran second in the 2022 Bitterroot Futurity.
Interesting Eagle (Seperate Interest-Eagle On The Fly) and Dont Sass KVN (KVN Corona-Sassy On Fire) finished fourth and fifth. Ghost Witha Fire (A Revenant-Dash Through Fire) and Hay Shaker (Favorite Cartel-Bubblie) dead-heated for sixth. They were followed by Chicks First Flash (First Moonflash-First Prize Chicks), Hes Chickless (Hes Relentless-Chickitita), and Jettin Gigi (KVN Corona-Jet Takeoff).
Take A Swig Of This is congratulated after his victory.
