Brad McKinzie Winter Championship-G1
APOLLITICAL PENCE
by Tracy Gantz
Billed as the rubber match between two truly talented horses, the $144,950 Brad McKinzie Los Alamitos Winter
Championship-G1 on Feb. 19 pitted Empressum against Apollitical Pence. Newly crowned as the 2022 World Champion, Empressum had defeated Apollitical Pence in the 2022 Champion of Champions-G1 after Apollitical Pence had beaten him in the 2022 Robert L. Boniface Los Alamitos Invitational Championship Stakes-G1.
The two each won their respective Winter Championship trials, with Empressum posting the fastest time. Apollitical Pence, owned by Matt and Bendi Dunn’s Dunn Ranch, won the race last year. However, bettors opted for the World Champion, sending 5-year-old Empressum and jockey Rodrigo Vallejo away as the 1-2 favorite
over 7-year-old Apollitical Pence and jockey Armando Cervantes at 7-2.
