MALIBU BEACH
by Michael Cusortelli
The fifth-fastest qualifier from five trials, Keith
Bode’s Malibu Beach won the $191,718 QHRAI Stallion Service Auction Futurity for 2 year olds sired by participating stallions at Horseshoe Indianapolis on Sept. 2.
Malibu Beach covered 350 yards in :17.566 under jockey Giovani Vazquez-Gomez, and her margin of victory was a 1/2-length over Dupont Beach. Jessica Vazquez prepped the gray daughter of the Corona Cartel stallion Escondido Beach.
Malibu Beach was bred in Indiana by Sheri Miller, and she was purchased by Bode
from the Miller Ranch’s annual
online sale last fall. The filly moved
to the Vazquez barn after her second-place finish in a 250-yard maiden-special-weight dash for Indiana-bred 2-year-olds on June 3.
“We had so much faith in her heading into (this race),” said Vazquez. “Ever since we got her, she has been nothing but class.”
Malibu Beach broke her maiden with a wire-to-wire 2 1/2-length victory in her trial. The
filly is out of Project Runaway, a 10-year-old daughter
of Champion Mr Jess Perry bred by three-time Champion Breeder Bobby D. Cox. Malibu Beach
is her first winner from limited starters. Her second dam, the winning and multiple stakes-placed Runaway Winner mare Runaway Dee Dee, finished second in the Colors of the Wind Handicap as well as the Sundowner Trailer Stakes. She was also a finalist in the 1998 Retama Park Derby-G2 and named Texas Hi-Point Three-Year- Old Filly in 1998. Runaway Dee Dee has produced 19
winners from 26 starters with two stakes winners, including top earner A Down Right Runaway, winner of four stakes events, including the All American Congress Maturity-G3.
“After her win in the trial, we knew she’d be tough in the final,” said Vazquez. “Giovani just clicked with her from the start. He loves this filly, and he has a good eye for horses.”
Raced exclusively at Horseshoe Indianapolis, Malibu Beach has won two of her four outs, and the $77,082 winner’s
share of the purse from her first stakes victory increased the filly’s earnings to $91,982.
Dupont Beach (Duponte-Beach Birde) banked the $37,553 runner-up share of the purse for his owner Sheri Miller. Edgar Diaz rode the homebred bay gelding for trainer Claudio Barraza. Dupont Beach has placed second in three of his four starts.
Third fastest qualifer Cisco Beach (Escondido Beach-Tru Lee Quick) ran third 3/4-length behind Malibu Beach. Luz D. Martinez rode the bay gelding for owners Pamela Brickley Hann and Craig Zeneberg, and trainer Tony Cunningham. Cisco Beach has hit the board in all of her three starts with two wins and a third.
Followed by Lota Cat (Lota PYC-Chaposa Smoke). Lota Eura (Lota PYC-Eurapollitical Girl) and fastest qualifier DNA Jess Plain Bill (Jess Zoomin-Chrystal Dale) finished in a deadheat for 5th, then HH Express 19 (Freighttrain B-Shakem Jake), DNA Marfa Is Royal (The Marfa Lights-Royalcoronadacartel), and La Una Diva (Escondido Beach-La Una Viva). Divine Miss B was scratched.
THE SINGAPOREAN
by Michael Cusortelli
The second-fastest qualifier from nine trials, Casey Whitaker’s The Singaporean sprinted to a wire- to-wire victory in the $145,350 Sweetwater Downs Futurity at Rock Springs, Wyoming on Sept. 9.
The Singaporean defeated sixth-fastest qualifier Marfason by 1 1/2-lengths while covering 350 yards in :17.193, breaking the previous track record of :17.200 set by LHT Streakin Bid in 1993. Jesus Canales rode the homebred son of the Mr Jess Perry stallion Mr Apollitical Dash for trainer Sergio Canales.
The Singporean earned a career-best 108 speed index, but his track record was short lived, as multiple Grade 1 winner Pattys Saint broke
it with her victory in the September 10 Isawsugarbear Stakes. The sorrel gelding was bred in Utah, and he is out
of Easily Ratified, a winning daughter of the Strawfly Special stallion Desirio and a 1/2-sister to 2020 Rainbow Oaks winner Ratification.
The Singaporean’s second dam, the First
Down Dash mare Shesa First Ratify, won the 2010 Lubbock Stakes-G2 for fillies and mares at Zia Park and was 2nd in Champion Runnning Brook Gal’s ’09 All American Futurity-G1 at Ruidoso Downs. The gelding traces back to his third dam, Ratify, a winning Chicks Beduino mare and a finalist in the 1996 Heritage Place Derby-G1 at Remington Park.
The Singaporean made his local debut with a
$31,905 from six outs, hitting the board in four. Anselmo Padilla rode Marfason for owners Elsha McGarry and Ross Brown, who also trained the bay gelding.
Kaleigh Mac (Texas Icon-Icebreaker) finished third, 2-lengths behind The Singaporean, while earning $14,535 for her owner Gabriel Carballo. Oscar Cervantes rode the filly for trainer Sergio Canales. Kaleigh Mac won the Beehive Futurity in April and was second in the Bitterroot Futurity-G3 in July.
Fastest qualifier JR Sakes Alive (Pappasito-JR Mahalia) was fourth, then JCIC Favored By Pi (Jesscuzican-The Favorite Pie), Talk Cowboy To Me (Flying Cowboy 123-Dirty Harriett), Long Shot Lewie (Big Lew-Miss Kissn Te), JKH Cartel Silk (Pappasito-JKH Last Dance), and Tempt The Lane (Kiss My Hocks-SH Alibi Dash) completed the order of finish. Tenth-fastest qualifier Ivorybudsnblossoms was scratched.
