mares, maybe closer to 400, and he’d have 10-12- 15 stallions. He was one of the first people we met when we got into the horse business, and I’ve always reached out to him for help and advice.
“One thing I admire about him is his horsemanship,” Norma adds. “He’s been my mentor in the business, and I’ve learned an awful lot from him. I remember early on we went to a sale that was being held in Hondo at that time. He didn’t know us, but he had set these stalls up for his horses and he said, ‘Just take one of those [stalls], and don’t worry about coming out to feed in the morning; we’ll take care of it.’ I didn’t think to give him a phone number and when we got back the next day, he was sitting there with red, bloodshot eyes and I said, ‘Wow, you look like you had a hard night.’ He said our horse had colic and he’d been up with her all night!
“He’s one of the most well-known and successful people in yearling sales in New Mexico,” she concludes. “When we first met him, he told us he had the sale topper and Dosi and I just looked at each other and said, ‘How does he know that?’ But he did, and he’d tell us when he didn’t, too. He always had a good handle on the business and the sales. And he has a lot of character; he has strong opinions and is always very, very honest about them.”
At this year’s Ruidoso New Mexico- Bred Yearling Sale in August, Double LL acted as agent in selling hip number 141 for $125,000—among the top 10 consigned.
