Enrique Carrión Álvarez Classic
MOON FLASH CHIC
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Speedhorse
With the withdrawal of the favorite RG Onchao A King and First Krash, the number of participants in this classic was reduced to only six, all of them 3 years old and older Mexico-bred non stakes winners. The purse allocated to the race was $262,000 pesos ($12,672 U.S. approx.) and was contested over 350 yards on a fast track.
It was a clean race from start to finish. At the break, Speedn Eagle (#1) took the lead very close to the inside rail, while at the opposite end of the track Divas First Jet (#7) drifted sharply towards the outside rail with plenty of room to run. Meanwhile, Moon Flash Chic (#7) established himself very well on the track and responded to the demands of Yair Daniel Báez Soto to quickly overtake Speedn Eagle and Aint Eagle 50 yards from the finish and stayed the course, finishing 1-length ahead of Divas First Jet.
The race concluded in :17.23 for a 90 speed index, marking Moon Flash Chic’s fourth win from 11 starts.
The four-year-old bay colt is a son of First Moonflash and out of the mare BP Snowy Success by Cartel Success, and he was bred by Mike Abraham. He is owned by Cuadra Los Gavilanes, where Rubén Romo Hernández trains him.
He earned his first win in a maiden on Nov. 1, 2020, over 250 yards and immediately after, he won his trial and qualified for the finals of the Mexican Breeders’ Derby, where he finished in fourth place. His third victory came in an allowance at 350 yards on June 27, 2021, also under the guidance of Yair Daniel Baez Soto, who has manned him in eight of his 11 races.
As of March 20, Báez leads the rider division at the Hipódromo de Las Américas in the 2022 season. He has ridden the winners
of the Francisco Pasquel Classic (Divas
First Anita, with a New Track Record), the Inaugural Classic (JRS Coronas Shadow) and now the Enrique Carrión Álvarez Classic. On
March 6, he also defeated the mare Speedy Moon First to set a 330-yard New Track Record.
Three-year-old Divas First Jet (Divas First Down, Eyes Tricky Too, Mr Eye Opener) finished in second place under Huberclein Gomez. He is owned by Cuadra Los Sementales, bred by Zamarrero Ranch Inc., and is trained by Alfonso Arturo Loza Loza.
Aint Eagle (Jabuti Eagle SA-Aint Yours, Wave Carver) was third under Gabriel Antonio Vega for owner Rancho Don Memo, breeder Salomé Gallegos and trainer by Adán López Alejandre.
Speedn Eagle (Jabuti Eagle SA-Speednchico), Corona Sheeza (Danny Cartel-Latina Sheeza) and Adriana Sola (Senior Solo-Juego Con Fuggo) completed the order of finish.
