The photo on page 272 shows 3-time stakes winner Rovargas Jr (Rovargas-Silent Jenny, Silent Devil) with his winning connections after winning the 1982 Delta Downs Louisiana Breeders’ Futurity, now the Lee Berwick Memorial Futurity.
His connections included breeder/owner/trainer Alvin Addison and jockey Ashton Richard. The purse for the 1982 event was $145,400.
Rovargas Jr was foaled in 1980 in Louisiana and is a half- brother to Louisiana Breeders’ Laddie Futurity winner Omega Devil and Delta Downs Louisiana Bred Derby winner Jennys Image. Rovargas Jr was sired by multiple stakes sire Rovargas and out of unraced Silent Jenny.
Rovargas Jr raced on the track from the age of two until he was seven years old. During that time, he won 20 races from 39 starts with $169,998 in total earnings. In addition to the Lee Berwick Memorial Futurity, he also won the Evangeline Downs Louisiana Breeders’ Derby and Golden Triangle Handicap. He was also second in the Delta Downs Louisiana Bred Derby and third in the Delta Downs Derby Classic and was a finalist in the Firecracker Derby-G2.
After his career on the track, Rovargas Jr went on to sire 24 foals, 11 of which went to the track. He sired four winners, with his top earner being Keepyoureyesongas who won 10 races from an impressive 55 starts. He finished second in the Louisiana Bred Laddie Futurity-RG3 and Mardi Gras Futurity and was a finalist in the Louisiana Champions Day Classic-RG2 and Delta Downs Louisiana Bredders’ Futurity-RG3.
This year’s Lee Berwick Futurity-RG1 was won by San Lorenzo Jet (Jet Black Patriot-Miss Delta Duck, Fly Jess Fly). The colt was ridden by David Alvarez for owner Rogelio Marquez Jr. and trainer Jesus Marquez. With a purse of $729,416, the event was contested at Delta Downs on July 16.
