Woodys Gold, a sorrel son of Woodbridge owned by Cavenaugh Quarter Horses LLC, broke sharply from post 6 and earned a wire-to- wire win in the Sept. 20, $375,559 New Mexico State Fair Futurity (RG3) for state-bred juveniles.
Ridden by Francisco Calderon for trainer Clint Crawford and sent to post as the even- money favorite in the field of 10, Woodys Gold went 400 yards in :19.649, and his margin of victory was 1 1/4-lengths from 16-1 longshot and eighth-fastest qualifier Fanncee. The geld- ing earned a 90 speed index while posting his first career stakes win.
Woodys Gold set the fastest qualifying
time with his 3/4-length win in the fourth of five New Mexico State Fair Futurity trials on Aug. 28. A $10,000 yearling purchase by Don Cavenaugh at last year’s New Mexico-Bred Sale at Ruidoso Downs, the gelding was bred by Mac and Janis Murray’s MJ Farms.
Woodys Gold’s sire, Woodbridge,is a full brother to Grade 1 winner and one-time 440- yard world record holder Kendall Jackson, Woodbridge has sired the earners of more than $3.9 million from eight crops, including multi- ple graded stakes winner and 2019 All American Futurity (G1) runner-up Mister Riptide, and graded stakes winners Woodys Copy Cat, Carson City Girl, and Woodys Allstar.
Woodbridge stands for a $4,500 fee at MJ Farms at Veguita, New Mexico.
Woodys Gold is out of All About Gold (TB), a winning daughter of the Forty
Niner stallion Gold Case. His second dam, Special Ending, is a winning daughter of the Cormorant stallion In Enclose. The gelding’s third dam, the Vigors mare Arusha, produced seven winners from as many starters, including Buford Blue, a multiple stakes placed half- brother to Special Ending.
Woodys Gold traces back to his fifth dam, Royal Signal (TB), a Pennsylvania- bred daughter of the Sailor stallion Ahoy who won five stakes from 1970-72, includ- ing the first division of the 1970 Acorn Stakes at Aqueduct.
Woodys Gold has won three of six starts, and the $187,779 winner’s share of the State Fair Futurity purse pushed his bankroll to $325,282. The gelding began his career with a second-place finish in a 350-yard Mountain Top Futurity (RG2) trial at Ruidoso Downs on May 29. After running second, a neck behind winner Leading Cartel, in the June 13, $334,069 Mountain Top final, Woodys Gold qualified to the June 26, $352,547
Zia Futurity (RG2) and finished second, 1/2-length behind winner Hollyn Bootie.
