Mr Jess Perry has sired three starters out of Remember Me Rose in Mr Perry Rose, a race winner of $9,030; Moonshine Memory, a winner of $1,650; and Remember Mr
Jess, a winner of $6,130. All three of these runners have earned their ROM. The interesting part here is the only duplication of ancestors in their pedigrees is a breeding pattern of 5x5 to Easy Jet.
Favorite Cartel is the sire of the last four runners we will look at out of Remember Me Rose, and we will start with The Revenant, a multiple stakes finalist including the 2017 Golden State Million Futurity-G1, who
was also third in the PCQHRA Breeders’ Futurity-G2, Governor’s Cup Futurity-G2 and 2018 Jens L List Jr Memorial California Breeders’ Stakes. Powerful Favorite is
next, and he earned his black type in the 2018 with a win in the Governor’s Cup Futurity-G2. He was also a finalist in the
Ed Burke Million Futurity-G1 and the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity-G1. He came back at three to secure wins in the Los Alamitos Winter Derby-G1, Governor’s Cup Derby-G1, and El Primero Del Ano Derby. He has earned $775,822 in his career so
far. Runforyourlife is the next runner out of Remember Me Rose, and he won the 2019 Golden State Million Futurity-G1 and was
a finalist in the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity-G1. He has earned $583,753 thus
far. The fourth runner from this cross is Forgot The Rose, a race winner of two of her five starts with $11,735 in earnings.
The breeding design we see with these four Favorite Cartel runners is a 3x2 breed- ing pattern to Corona Cartel. Favorite Cartel is out of Shenoshercorona by Corona Cartel – and Remember Me Rose is a daughter of Corona Cartel. This is the closest inbreeding we have seen in the Remember Me Rose run- ners. Here is what Dr. Burns said about the cross, “We thought that can be kind of close, but it seems Favorite Cartel crosses well on the Corona Cartel mares. Like, Remember Me Rose and Dr. Allred’s mare Moonlight Corona had two big runners last year. So, they seem to nick with him pretty good.”
A possible genetic explanation may wbe found with two stallions in the pedigrees
of these four runners. The first is Favorite Trick TB, the sire of Favorite Cartel, and the other is Zevi TB, the broodmare sire of Remember Me Rose. Both of these stallions show no duplication of ancestors in the first four generations of their pedigree and, thus, they come into the pedigree as outcross stal- lions bringing hybrid vigor to the pedigree.
These four runners are linebred or, one might say, inbred to Corona Cartel, but that inbreeding is getting a shot of hybrid vigor or genetic diversity through Favorite Trick and Zevi. We often see this, and the great Leo is
an example. He is by Joe Reed II by Joe Reed P-3 and out of Little Fanny by Joe Reed P-3. The dam of Joe Reed II is Nellene by Fleeting Time TB, and Little Fanny is out of Fanny Ashwell by a Thoroughbred named Ashwell.
Remember Me Rose was a great race mare, and the design of her pedigree allows us to call her a ‘genetic sport.’ This is a term coined by Jay Pumphrey, former AQHA President and longtime general manager of the Burnett Ranches. Pumphrey was also a well-known pedigree enthusiast that gave us the AQHA Hall of Fame stallion Azure Te. He used the great Secretariat as a ‘genetic sport,’ or a horse that has no duplication of ancestors in five generations.
When Secretariat became a sire, he
was unable to duplicate his greatness as a runner. Pumphrey attributed this to the fact that he was not bred to mares that carried common ancestors in their pedi- gree. The interesting part of this is we now see Secretariat as an influence when the pedigree carries multiple crosses to him. An example of this is Munnings, who is making his presence known as a sire this year with five graded stakes winners in this strange year of racing. He has a breeding pattern of 4x5x4 to Secretariat.
Remember Me Rose was a famous race mare and now her fame has grown as the 2019 Speedhorse Broodmare of the Year.
