“There is a group of influential owners, breeders, and trainers at Ruidoso,” Wise related. “If it doesn’t happen on the mountain, it doesn’t count for them. Jess Good Candy really put a stamp on the year with his 2 year olds at Ruidoso. These horses can compete
at 350, 400, 440. The future looks bright for him, and we are excited about those 2 year olds from last year coming back this year. And he has an awfully good set of 2 year olds out there. We are hearing that from a lot of trainers right now, but we have to wait until they get out there and prove themselves.”
Crawford is one such trainer. He has a few offspring from Jess Good Candy’s second crop that he has high expectations for in 2021.
“I had four or five runners by him last year but no standouts,” Crawford said. “I have a few that I really like this year. One is a filly out of Candy Cartel named Good Candy Cartel and
a colt out of Jess A Cartel named Jess A Payday. They can run. I have had a lot of good 2 year olds in my barn every year and a few I really like this year, but I’ve not come across another one like him.
“All his offspring are good-natured, kind of laid-back horses,” Crawford added. “He passes that mindset along. He was born an athlete and he was broke when he showed up.”
Jess Good Candy has worked with mares from different sire lines, and Wise related that he is an easy stallion to get along with.
“He crosses well with a variety of mares,” Wise said. “He doesn’t seem to be a mare-specific horse in terms of genetics. As

far as his demeanor goes, he is a big pup. He is a very willing horse as one would imagine. If you make $2 million in two years (at the track) you probably didn’t beat yourself. He is a good-minded horse,
and he passes that along. His offspring are determined and willing and they really are horses that want to win.”
Just like their sire, a Champion on the racetrack and in the breeding shed.
