2020 Leading Freshman Sire of The Year
JESS GOOD CANDY by Larry Thornton
The first gelding to win the All American Futurity was Higheasterjet (shown) in 1980.
AQHA Leading Breeder with earnings of over $9 million. He is an AQHA Leading Owner with his horses having earned over $3 million. Mr. Pevehouse never got to see his colt win the All American Futurity G1, as he passed away in April of 2014. The Pevehouse family has continued the legacy for Carl, racing his line of horses as PV Quarter Horse Farms LLC.
The All American Futurity-G1 is the dream and goal of anyone involved in Quarter Horse racing. We all dream of winning this important race, especially when it comes to the money you win. But it also puts the winners in a very select group of owners, breeders, trainers and jockeys to hold the title of All American Futurity winner in their respective category.
But there is another side of the influ- ence of the All American Futurity - it is the breeding side of it. We see stallions, mares and geldings that have won this race. For the stallions and mares, it means an opportunity to strengthen their status as an influence on the breed carrying the All American winning banner into their breeding careers.
This brings me to an interesting trend in
the All American Futurity. We are seeing more geldings win this race. From 1959 to 1999 we saw 40 All American Futurities. In that 40 years, we saw seven geldings win the race. It took until 1980 for the first gelding to win the race when Higheasterjet crossed the finish line first. He was followed by Eastex in 1984, Refrigerator in 1990, Noblesse Six in 1994, Winalota Cash in 1995, Streakin Flyer in 1996 and A Delightful Dasher in 1999. The gelding trend continued into the new century with nine geldings win- ning this great race between 2000 to 2020.
They are By By JJ in 2003, DM Shicago in 2004, Stolis Winner in 2008, Ochoa in 2011, Handsome Jack Flash in 2013, JM Miracle in 2014, Imperial Eagle in 2016, Apocalyptical Jess in 2018 and Mr Jess Jenkins in 2019.
The positive side of this gelding trend is how they prove their sire as an All American Futurity winning sire. This is an important designation for a stallion that didn’t win the All American Futurity. So not all good stal- lions have to win the All American Futurity to be good sires. But if they are a winner of this great race just like the owners, breeders, trainers and jockeys that have won this race, it makes them a part of this elite club.
Jess Good Candy won the 2015 All American Futurity. He is the only colt to win this race in the last five years. This sets him up as the most recent progenitor to carry the banner of an All American Futurity winner to become a sire. Let’s take a look at the cre- dentials of Jess Good Candy to be a sire and what he brings to the legacy of the stallions that win the All American Futurity.
The late Carl Pevehouse, a prominent Oklahoma breeder of racing Quarter Horses, is the breeder of Jess Good Candy. Mr. Pevehouse was the Oklahoma Quarter Horse Racing Association Leading Breeder and Owner from 2011 to 2015. He is an
