Jess Good Candy is the only colt to win the All American Futurity in the last five years.
RACE RECORD
Jess Good Candy was undefeated as a racehorse. His race campaign was handled by Clint Crawford. Crawford, Butch Wise, Cheryl Pevehouse and Rozella Pevehouse were interviewed by Greg Thompson for “The Making of a Sire Series” that featured Jess Good Candy at Stallionesearch.com. We will highlight some of their comments in our look at Jess Good Candy.
Thompson asked Crawford about the first time he saw Jess Good Candy. “I saw Jess Good Candy when he was right off his mama as a weanling and he just looked like a big sorrel colt out there and they had a bunch of babies and they all looked good.
“I didn’t see him again until we went to pick him up as a yearling, that was around September,” Crawford continued. “We had
all the horses loaded in the trailer. We still had one to get and he was on the hill. So, we drove
up the hill and that one was Jess Good Candy. When we drove up, there he was, and I was in awe when I saw him. Just a big good lookin’ colt. He just stood up, and you’ve seen the pic- tures, that is how he just stood up and looked at me. I turned around to Rozella and I told her, ‘You want your horse to go the mountain? This is the one you want. He is the one.’”
The plan for Jess Good Candy from the beginning was the All American Futurity-G1, but his first start came at Remington Park where he won his maiden. His next start came in the Ruidoso Futurity trials where he won but failed to make the top five for the day.
He did qualify for the Ruidoso Juvenile, but they chose to pass. They found that Jess Good Candy had popped a splint, and so Crawford brought him along slow, allowing him to heal for a start in the All American Futurity trials.
One of problems with Jess Good Candy was a predisposition to lug in at the start of
his races. So, G. R. Carter worked him out of the gate, and he still didn’t come out of the gate right. But it was on to the All Amer- ican trials where he was slow to break and Crawford thought it was over. But Carter got the colt going and they won by a nose, qualifying for the All American Futurity. They were all impressed with the way Carter got him moving to catch the leaders and win the race. As Crawford put it, “I still get chills watching that race.”
G. R. Carter had qualified four horses for the All American Futurity, including Jess Good Candy. He chose to ride First Valiant Sign, winner of the Ruidoso Futurity-G1. It was at this point that Ivan Carnero became the rider for Jess Good Candy.
Jess Good Candy remained true to form in the finals as he broke slow out of post five and bumped the four horse, but then he was off to the races. He took
