Breeder Carl Pevehouse with his daughter Cheryl.
charge of the race, with One Fabulous Eagle finishing a close second, TF Im That Guy finishing third and First Valiant Sign finishing fourth. His four starts at two and his signature win in the 2015 All American earned him the title of Champion Two- Year-Old-Colt.
After some ankle surgery, his three-year- old campaign took a similar route as his two- year-old campaign. He made his first start
at Remington Park, but this time instead of a maiden win, he won the Mr Master Bug Handicap. Then he was off to Ruidoso for the Ruidoso Derby-G1.
The Ruidoso Derby-G1 was the signature race for the three-year-old campaign. His trial win qualified him for the finals and the derby win seemed to endorse his racehorse credentials. This time he started from the 10 hole with a good start, but he drifted out. As the race developed and as the race descrip-
tion reads, “He rolled home.” He won by 1 3/4-lengths in a time of :19.477.
Ivan Carnero believes that the Ruidoso Derby-G1 was his best race and that he made other horses look slow. But Butch Wise, man- ager of the Lazy E Ranch, may have summed it up best, “The statement was made ‘How loud was the sonic boom?’ when he went
by the grandstand. It was like he broke the sound barrier. He was out there just having fun. He showed that tremendous reach that he has, and he just crushed them.”
Jess Good Candy won his trial for the All American Derby and that would prove to be his last start. This time he broke good, but the track was against him as it had rained
and made the going tough. As the day went on, the track got faster and he failed to qualify. So, he was retired with earnings of $2,014,703 from his eight wins in eight starts and he was off to his breeding career.
G. R. Carter had qualified four horses for the All American Futurity, including Jess Good Candy.
He chose to ride First Valiant Sign, which is when Ivan Carnero became the rider for Jess Good Candy.
