Las Americas Derby
JESS A REASON
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Speedhorse
The Las Americas Derby is the third jewel of the Mexican Triple Crown for Quarter Horses. At 400 yards, the event was held on July 25, with the participation of six horses, who were disputing a purse of $277,400 pesos ($13,711 U.S. approx.).
The betting favorite, Jess A Reason did
not hesitate to make it count when the action began. Breaking on top and leading most of the way, the filly AR Dashin Waggin led the group in the first 300 yards or so of the race. At that point, jockey Daniel Baez Soto and Jess A Reason made a final surge to surpass the leader with ease and reach the wire first by 1 1/2-length, stopping the timer in :19.23 for a 101 speed index.
Bred in the United States by Turner Farms, Jess A Reason was acquired by Rachuán Suárez for $100,000 in the 2019 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale on behalf of the Cuadra Baldeli. He is a son of stallion Good Reason SA and out of Jess Send Me, who finished second in the All American Futurity, earned $361,595, and
is the dam of stakes winner Jess Send It SI 105 ($57,356) and stakes placed Jess Macho Corona SI 99 ($300,422).
Jess A Reason’s record is
4-2-0 in 6 outings, includ-
ing first place in the Juvenile
Championship in his first
season (2020), second place in
the AMCCCCM Classic and
now first in the Las Americas
Derby. A very consistent
record, he has always come in
first or second place, with accumulated earn- ings of $808,347 pesos ($40,417 U.S. approx.). His daily training is the responsibility of José Guadalupe García “Lupillo”, who is officially represented by trainer Ismael Ayala Salas.
With this result, the Mexican Quarter Horse Triple Crown is declared over this season, as the winner of each race was differ- ent: Ferarri B in the Easily A Possum Classic, Corona Lips in the AMCCCCM Classic, and
Jess A Reason in the Las Americas Derby.
Winner of the Alfredo Castro Rea Classic, AR Dashin Waggin (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Curlie Cue) finished in second place under the successful direction of Alejandro Gómez Díaz for owner Cuadra Santa Elena and trainer Joaquín Ramón Peláez Cortés.
Thelouisianadiamonds (The Louisiana Cartel-Pay Me Diamonds) took third place in his first experience in a
stakes event. The colt was ridden by Alejandro Almazán for owner Cuadra Valtoro and trainer Alberto Fernández Pasten.
One Happenstance (One Fabulous Eagle-Beaus Wagon), TDS Policy (Tempting Dash-CC Policy), and Smokin My Hocks (Kiss My Hocks-Smokin Corona Chick) completed the order of finish.
