During the Thoroughbred portion of the sale, 55 yearlings sold for a total of $759,600. The average sale price checked in at $13,811, and the repurchase rate was 38 percent.
Significant records were broken during the three-day Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale, held September 3-5 at the Ruidoso Downs Sale Pavilion.
A total of 359 of the 401 yearlings
offered sold for a record $23,812,000 gross,
a 40-percent increase over the 2019 Select Yearling Sale, during which 343 yearlings brought a $17,044,200 gross. This year’s average-per-head price of $66,329 was also a record and marked a 33-percent increase over the 2019 average of $49,692.
Also, the 2021 median price of $48,000 was 37 percent higher than the 2019 median of $35,000, and the buyback rate was a record low 12 percent.
“Best sale ever; I’m still in shock,” said Ruidoso Horse Sale Company general manager Lowell Neumayer. “I cannot thank enough
the many new buyers, and our consignors who brought such a strong set of yearlings.”
During the first night of the sale, September 3, a total of 163 yearlings sold for a one-night record gross sum of $9,384,179.
“We’ve never had a first session of our sale come close in comparison to this record,” said Neumayer.
The Select Sale’s top seller brought $800,000, which was a record price for a
Quarter Horse yearling sold at auction. Consigned by Julianna Hawn Holt, First Texas Flash (Hip No. 137) was purchased
by the West Texas Racing Partners. The sale price topped the previous record of $700,000 paid for Corona Caliente at the 2001 Vessels/ Schvaneveldt Sale in Bonsall, California.
First Texas Flash is a son of 2009 champion aged stallion First Moonflash out of Stylish Jess BR, a Grade 1-winning daughter of Feature
Mr Jess and the sport’s champion aged mare
in 2009. The brown colt is a full brother to multiple Grade 1 winner and two-time AQHA champion Flash And Roll.
The Select Sale’s second-highest seller, Jess Muchacho Corona (Hip No. 351), was purchased for $450,000 by Adan Cantu. Consigned by Turner Farms, the bay Corona Cartel colt is out of Jess Send Me, a winning 12-year-old daughter of Feature Mr Jess and the runner-up in the 2011 All American Futurity (G1). Jess Muchacho Corona is a full brother to two stakes winners, including Grade 3 winner and 2019 All American Derby (G1) runner-up Jess Macho Corona.
Rosenthal Ranch LLC paid $400,000 for Cyber Attack (Hip No. 252), the Select Sale’s third-highest seller. Consigned by Burns Ranch, agent, Cyber Attack is by the Favorite Trick (TB) stallion Favorite Cartel and is
out of Grade 1 winner and AQHA Dam of Distinction Remember Me Rose, a 17-year- old Corona Cartel mare. The brown colt is
a full brother to Grade 1 winners Powerful Favorite, Runforyourlife, and Cyber Monday,
and he is a half-brother to stakes winners Intense Fire and Tessta Rossa.
Ray Yeigh (Hip No. 265), a Favorite Cartel colt out of the 12-year-old winning and graded stakes placed Check Him Out mare Tac Out, check in as the Select Sale’s fourth-highest seller. Consigned by Burns Ranch, agent, Ray Yeigh was purchased for $310,000 by Manuel and Reed and Kevin Rodriguez.
Two yearlings -- Hott Dynasty (Hip No. 294) and Whiskey Creek (Hip No. 276) sold for $300,000. A filly by champion FDD Dynasty, Hott Dynasty was purchased by Chow Racing Ventures from the consignment of Fulton Quien Sabe Ranches LP, while Whiskey Creek, a colt by world champion Apollitical Jess, was purchased
by Joe Dee Brooks, Scott Bryant, Shaun Hubbard, R. Lee Lewis, and Ray Willis from the consignment of Lazy E Ranch, agent for Jim Streelman and Bill Dale.
The West Texas Racing Partnership led all Select Sale buyers with six purchases grossing $1,147,000. Lazy E Ranch LLC, agent for McColee Land and Livestock LLC, was the sale’s leading consignor and agent with 24 yearlings grossing $2,429,000.
First Moonflash, a New Mexico-bred son of champion First To Flash, was the sale’s leading sire by average (with two or more sold), with 12 head averaging $121,167. Eye Am King, an unplaced son of champion Mr Jess Perry and a full brother to stakes winner Dr Jess, was the sale’s leading first-crop sire with three head averaging $59,667.
