  SHINING SOURCE
Longshot Shining Source outran his 17-1
odds to win the September 12, 7-furlong O.D. McDonald Handicap (R) at Albuquerque Downs.
Racing for Barton Racing LLC and trainer Terri Rust, Shining Source rallied off of the frac- tions of :21.96 and :44.93 established by paceset- ters Tucum and Ancient Land before reaching the wire in 1:22.23 and defeating 16-1 longshot Jet N G by 3/4-length. Aldo Arboleda rode the 10-year- old son of the Montbrook stallion Source.
Shining Source was coming off of a sixth- place finish in a 7-furlong allowance-optional claiming ($20,000) at Albuquerque Downs. The gelding was bred by Susan Vescovo, and he is
to date the lone stakes winner sired by Source, a Kentucky-bred stallion who from 2001-06 earned $368,125 from 61.
Source has sired the earners of more than $1.4 million from 34 starters. He is owned by Everardo Torres Nevarez, and he stands for a $2,500 fee at E & E Ranch.
Shining Source is also one of three winners from five starters produced by Shine Miss Comet, a winning New Mexico-bred daughter of the Fappiano stallion Comet Shine. A 2002 foal, Shine Miss Comet also foaled Kimbell, who won the 2017 Peppers Pride New Mexico Cup Distaff Championship (R) at Zia Park.
Shining Source traces back to his fourth
dam, Goldian, a California-bred daughter of
the Nantallah stallion Ridan. A 1969 foal, Goldian won the 1971 Santa Clara Stakes at Bay Meadows, and she was a half-sister to stakes win- ner By Popular Demand. The mare also produced four stakes winners in California from 1978-83.
Raced in three states, including Oklahoma and Wyoming, Shining Source has won 15 of
62 starts, and the $58,000 winner’s share of
the purse from his seventh career stakes victory increased his bankroll to $698,545. The gelding’s resume includes victories in the 2017 and 2018 Jack Cole Stakes (R) at SunRay Park, and the 2017 and 2019 New Mexico State University Handicap (R) at Sunland Park.
This past summer, Shining Source scored an 8 1/4-length victory as the 3-1 favorite in the 1-mile $15,000 Au Revoir Handicap (not black type) at Wyoming Downs.
Shining Source returned a $36.40 win mutuel and teamed with runner-up Jet N G for a $1,096.40 ($2) exacta. Evacuee, a 21-1 longshot, finished third, 3-lengths behind Shining Source, to complete a $1 trifecta dividend of $5,993.30.
Thunder Dome finished fourth and was followed by 8-5 favorite Ancient Land, Tucum, Pulpits Fox, Sunscreen, Storm Bayou, Golden
Band, Lil Latigo, and Wheredoesthecashgo.
Jet N G is a homebred six-year-old son of the
Old Trieste stallion Mr. Trieste campaigned by Maurcenia Cross. A full brother to 2011 Dine Stakes (R) runner-up Numberoneson, the gelding has won five of 30 starts, and the $20,000 run- ner-up share of the O.D. McDonald Handicap purse bumped his earnings to $232,363.
Evacuee is a gelded four-year-old son of the Pulpit stallion Abstraction owned by B4 Farms LLC. A $30,000 yearling purchase at the 2018 New Mexico-Bred Sale at Ruidoso Downs, Evacuee has won three of 15 outs and the $10,000 third-place share of the purse boosted his bankroll to $206,809.
