The photo on page 199 shows Mr Gobar (I May Go-Charm Bars, Royal Bar) winning the second ever Shue Fly Stakes in 1973 at Sunland Park. This race was not a restricted race prior to 1993. He was ridden by Johnny Cox for owner Kenneth Grisham, who also trained the horse, and A D Stowe, who also bred the horse. Mr Gobar started his career
at two years of age and only raced to the age of three. During that time, he made 30 starts with eight wins and placed in 13 other races. Beside this stake win, he also placed second in the 1973 Rainbow Futurity and New Mexico State Fair Futurity and third in the 1974 New Mexico Breeders’ Derby and the Zia Handicap with earnings of $110,283.
After his successful career on the track, Mr Gobar went on to sire 95 foals, 28 of which went to the track. He sired 14 winners. This year’s $237,763 Shue Fly Stakes-RG2 was won by My Heart Jess Runs. The filly was ridden by Mario Delgado for owner Boydston Enterprises Inc. and trainer James Gonzalez III.
