and they had bred her to the Paint stallion Texas Hero.”
He then added, “I bought Fontana Beaujolais in January, and it wasn’t but about four months I started getting calls from people wanting to buy her. When people start calling you wanting to buy your stock, you need to look around because something is happening. Well, come to find out John Bassett had a Royal Quick Dash, and he was telling people he thought was the best he had in the barn. Well, it didn’t happen that way, but he was a stakes horse that won out over $140,000. His name was Royal Medallion. So, I got real lucky right off the bat when I bought that mare.
She hit on Royal Quick Dash. But now when you look in that pedigree you see there are 8
or 10 black type horses, and she’s been bred to everything and produced. She doesn’t have all the Jess Perry, the Corona Cartel and all that, so I could breed her to anything at that time.”
Crazy Down Corona. That is how we got the family started.”
The official race record for Crazy About Corona – the dam of Crazy Down Corona - shows that she had 16 starts with seven wins, two seconds and two thirds earning $90,252. She was a stakes winner in the Fair Meadows Belles Stakes with a second in the Bob Moore Memorial Stakes-G3 and thirds in the Remington Park Futurity-G2 and Kansas Futurity-RG2.
The produce record for Crazy About Corona shows that she has ten starters, all ROM, with one stakes winner and two stakes placed runners. Her stakes winner is Jess One More Thing, winner of the 2013 Will Rogers Juvenile with thirds in both the Speedhorse Futurity-G2 and Fair Meadows Juvenile. Her stakes placed runners were Alotalota, who was second in the 2019 Remington Park Juvenile; and Lota Cac, who was second in the 2018 Speedhorse Derby.
It is at this point we will add the mare Fontana Beaujolais, as she is the dam of Crazy About Corona by Corona Cartel.
As Holt related in our earlier story, he had come into the horse business through some friends and tried to get involved with an interest in breeding good racehorses. So, he bought some and found that quality beat quantity and that is when he bought Fontana Beaujolais as this mare came with Crazy About Corona.
He continued, “I got lucky! The Corona breeding was the first year Corona Cartel was syndicated and that first year they were getting $20,000 on that first syndicate breeding. But I was really looking at Debonairess to be honest with you. There were only a couple of light stakes placed horses in that family when
I bought her. She even had a Paint, as the Grahams down in Texas had that mare
