Jes An Angel might get easily excited on the racetrack, but she travels well. She won seven of her 11 races in 2022 at six different racetracks, and her three stakes victories occurred in Louisiana, Oklahoma, and New Mexico. That versatility earned her the 2-Year-Old Filly Championship.
Jerry Windham bred the daughter of Jess Zoomin-Ms Kates Angel in Texas, and the family had already produced a Champion. Ms Kates Angel is a half-sister to Kates Dynasty, the 2013 Champion 2-Year-Old Filly.
Windham consigned Jes An Angel to the 2021 Heritage Place Yearling Sale, and Lance Moore purchased the filly at the sale from the breeder for $10,000.
Jes An Angel won her first stakes for Moore at Delta Downs, in the May 21 Old South Futurity. The fastest qualifier and the 2-1 favorite, she reached the wire 3/4- lengths in front for jockey Camilo Castillo and trainer Dustin Rhodes.
Next, she won her trial and qualified to
the Sam Houston Juvenile Challenge-G3, but stumbled badly at the start in the finals and lost all chance. She also won her trial for the All American Futurity-G1, but did not run in the final.
Moore later brought in Brad Williams and Don Forbes as partners on the filly, and Marc Jungers conditioned her for her final two stakes wins.
Jes An Angel finished fourth in her trial for the Black Gold Fillies Futurity at Will Rogers Downs, but qualified and redeemed herself in the final. Ridden by Bryan Candanosa, she broke on top and led throughout the 400 yards, scoring by 3/4-lengths.
“We sometimes have to remind her not every day is race day,” Jungers said following that race. “Now she has found her place and she is nice to be around. She is good to gallop, but a fellow has to pay attention or she will get away.”
Jes An Angel completed her 2022 season
with a sparkling 1/2-length win in the Dec. 11 Southwest Juvenile Championship-G2 at Zia Park. This time with Noe Garcia Jr. up and the 5-2 second choice, Jes An Angel defeated Grade 1 winner San Lorenzo Ivory by 1/2-length.
