Colitis puts a scare into any horse owner, and it takes a truly special horse to come back from it successfully. Golden Boi is a truly special horse and was voted his second title as the Champion 3-Year-Old Colt, last year he was the Champion 2-Year-Old Colt.
Valentin Zamudio trains Golden Boi for breeder/owner M and G Farms Inc. of Hendersonville, North Carolina. M and G Farms bred the colt in California.
Toward the end of the Golden Boi’s 2021 season, the colt had qualified the fastest for the Golden State Million Futurity-G1 at Los Alamitos. But he missed the final when he developed colitis.
“It was tough not to be a part of the Golden State Million because we felt that we had the horse to compete in the race with,” said Zamudio. “At the same time, the most important thing was to save the horse. When he got sick on us, I never thought about the Golden State Million from that point on. We were nervous.”
Golden Boi’s connections gave him plenty of time. They could have brought him back for the Los Alamitos Winter Derby-G1 but elected to pass the race. “At that point, maybe we could have pushed him,” said Zamudio. “But we still didn’t feel like he was ready, so we decided to wait.”
Golden Boi made his 3-year-old debut March 6 in the trials for the El Primero Del Ano Derby-G2 at Los Alamitos. He qualified the fastest and
went off as the 2-5 favorite in the March 27 final, rewarding his backers with a head victory.
Golden Boi next faced the starter in the Aug. 27 Sgt Pepper Feature Handicap. Sixth early, he flew past horses late to win by 3/4-lengths in an impressive performance. “We knew the 350-yard distance was not enough for him,” Zamudio said. “We have a lot of respect in the way he finishes because the takeoff is not his strength.”
Golden Boi had trouble in his final two starts of the year including third in the Los Alamitos Super Derby-G1 and fifth in the Z. Wayne Griffin Directors Handicap, but those two stakes wins after overcoming colitis earned him the Championship.
