Political Rose never lost throughout 2022. Her perfect five-for-five record deservedly earned her the 3-Year-Old Filly Championship.
Matt and Bendi Dunn, who run the Dunn Ranch in Wynnewood, Oklahoma, purchased Political Rose for $57,000 at the 2020 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale from the consignment of Lazy E Ranch. Stone Chase Stables bred the filly, a daughter of Apollitical Jess and out of Cartel Rosie.
“She was a pretty filly,” said Bendi. “Matt really loves the dam side of that family, and you can’t go wrong with Apollitical Jess.”
Political Rose won three of seven races at two. Dr. Tommy Hays took care of a couple of small injuries, and the Dunns gave her plenty of time to recuperate. That care paid off because Political Rose hasn’t lost since.
The Political Rose team included trainer Monty Arrossa and jockey Jesus Ayala, who rode her throughout 2022. They tuned her up with an allowance/optional claimer on April 21 at Remington Park, and she responded with an easy length victory.
That set her up for the trials and final of the Heritage Place Oaks. She qualified the fastest, blowing away the competition wire-to-wire by 3 3/4-lengths. Sent away as a 1-5 favorite in the May 28 final, she led throughout and scored by a length.
Arrossa and his team took Political Rose to Ruidoso Downs for the All American Oaks-G1. This time she won her trial by a length and qualified as the fifth fastest.
That didn’t deter the bettors, who wisely made Political Rose the 13-10 favorite in the Sept. 4 final. Despite a bit of bumping after the gate opened, Political Rose went right to the front and won wire-to-wire by 1 1/2 lengths.
“This filly has such a big heart and is so athletic,” said Arrossa after the race.
Political Rose’s spectacular effort paid off with a Championship title, and Matt Dunn thanked Arrossa and the entire team at the awards ceremony.
“This horse deserves a lot of credit—she’s a very nice horse,” Matt said. “I just want to tell everybody thank you for the ones that support the Dunn Ranch. We appreciate it.”
