Wascallywittlewabbit didn’t miss a beat, segueing from his first Distance Championship year in 2021 to what would be a second title in 2022.
Turning seven in 2022, the gelding strung together three consecutive wins in his five-race season. Wascallywittlewabbit began the year at Remington Park.
In the March 31 Pauls Valley Stakes-G2, Wascallywittlewabbit led throughout the 870 yards for jockey Josh Romero. The gelding defeated Shockinglyfamous by 3 1/2-lengths in :45.080.
“I chased him all year long last year and couldn’t catch him,” said Romero. “It was nice to get the mount this year. Once he got to the lead, he pricked those ears forward and took care of business.”
Romero rode Wascallywittlewabbit again
in the May 28 Remington Park Distance Championship-G1. This time sent away as the
1-2 favorite, the gelding again led throughout, his winning margin 2-lengths in :44.998 for 870 yards.
“When I asked him to run in the lane, it was incredible,” Romero said.
Michael Joiner trains Wascallywittlewabbit for owner Jarett Case Rogers’ Rogers Farms. Mike Weatherly bred the gelding out of Rabbits N Diamonds in New Mexico.
Joiner next took Wascallywittlewabbit to Ruidoso Downs for the Zia 870 Championship, a race the gelding had won in 2020 and 2021. This time ridden by Benito Baca, Wascallywittlewabbit scored wire-to-wire by 2 3/4-lengths. His time of :44.438 equaled the track record that he himself had set in the same race the previous year.
That pretty much sealed the Championship title for Wascallywittlewabbit. He finished the season with a third in the Downs at Albuquerque Distance Challenge and a fourth in the AQHA Distance Challenge Championship-G1. In 2022, he increased his lifetime record to 14 wins in 27 starts for total earnings of $387,910.
“He’s a once-in-a lifetime horse,” said Cody Joiner, Michael’s son and a trainer himself, at the awards ceremony. “He’s 914 pounds of beast. If you look at him, you wouldn’t pick him out of anything, but he’s got a heart of gold.”
