Rey Alfredo had an outstanding season in 2022 that culminated in his being named the Mexican Champion.
Freddy Mandujano Gutu owns Rey Alfredo, and Rachuan Suarez bred the gelding in Mexico. Rey Alfredo’s roots extend to Oklahoma, as both his sire Fearless Fritz and dam Proud Corrina are Oklahoma-breds.
Fearless Fritz connects Rey Alfredo with another 2022 Champion, the Champion Aged Mare Kiss Thru Fire. Graded stakes-placed Fearless Fritz is out of Fearless Freda, the second dam of Kiss Thru Fire.
Rey Alfredo, who won seven of his eight starts with one third, captured the two biggest races early in the season. The first was the March 6 Mexican Breeders Derby Challenge.
The trials were held Feb. 20 at the Hipodromo de las Americas, and Rey Alfredo covered the 350 yards in :17.167 to qualify the fastest of the two trials. For the March 6 final with jockey Jose Angel Ambrosio Medina aboard, Rey Alfredo was the favorite. He
led throughout to score by 3/4-lengths over longshot Joey Garoo AT. Rey Alfredo’s time of :17.00 earned him a speed index of 97.
The victory gave Rey Alfredo a double because as a two year old in 2021 he won the Mexican Breeders Futurity Challenge. Also at two, he took the consolation to the Subasta Selecta Futurity.
Rey Alfredo shortened up to 300 yards for
the April 10 Mexico Derby and performed just as well. Again he qualified the fastest, posting a time of :14.913 in his trial. In the final he again went favored and had Ambrosio aboard.
Breaking from post 10, Rey Alfredo was able to avoid the trouble that occurred to
his inside. Joey Garoo AT stumbled, and Jamaikina interfered with Perla Cartel, which also compromised Solo One. Rey Alfredo had a clear trip and won by 3/4-lengths in :14.88 for a speed index of 99.
Rey Alfredo’s 2022 season also included a victory in the Aug. 28 Subasta Selecta Derby.
