Garanones Futurity
AS MACHO
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Eduardo Silveyra
The finals of the second futurity of the season, reserved for Mexican breds auctioned at the Hipódromo de Las Américas, was held on July 15, 2018. Previously, 26 qualifying races were held, in which 211 individuals participated to obtain the 10 fastest among them at 300 yards.
In the first two days of trials, AS Macho set the tone for the finals by marking the best qualify- ing time of :15.15, followed by BR Bambino, One Rainbow and seven additional qualifiers to the large purse collected to reward them.
Betting preferences favored AS Macho and One Rainbow, who were also the top two fin- ishers in the Mexico Futurity, and a close duel was expected between these two sorrels.
The field made a clean break, with AS Macho in front. At around 100 yards, AS Macho (#7) clearly took off from the group, obeying the command of José Ángel Ambrosio Medina and claiming a resounding victory of 2-lengths differ- ence over One Rainbow (#4), who this time could do nothing against her quick and determined rival who stopped the clock at :14.92 (SI 105),
just three hundredths of a second to tie the track record set by Tempting Splash Dash last June 17.
AS Macho and his rider entered the winner’s circle under the hand of his trainer Ismael Parra Martinez, in his arms carrying his son Ismael Parra Jiménez, where they were met with a euphoric crowd who wanted to be part of the happy moment. The presentation acknowledg- ments were delivered by Mr. Antonio Lobeto Tamez, President of the Mexican Association
of Quarter Horse Breeders and Horsemen, the organizer of this event.
Present was veterinarian Arturo A. Siller Berain, who traveled with his family from Nueva Rosita, Coahuila, to see the horse bred at his Rancho Agua Linda succeed, a product of the cross of the stallion California Cartel (SI 93), a son of Corona Cartel and winner of two races and $16,630 in earnings, with the mare Check This Star Out (by Check Him Out).
He consigned the gelding to the 2017 Selecta Yearling Auction at the Hipodromo de las Américas (Hip# 17), where he reached $50,000 pesos ($2,800 US dollars), and was repurchased and later sold in a private treaty to Luis Simoni Merlo on the recommendation of the former rider and now trainer Ismael Parra Martinez, who is responsible for the conditioning that
has led him to add four wins in five starts to his record with a second place in the Mexico Futurity, running for Cuadra Falcón.
“The horse gave a much
better race than we expected.
As breeders, that satisfies and
benefits us. After 10 years of
participating with our year-
lings at the auction, this is the
first winner of a classic that
we have, and he did it in a big way after having finished second in the Mexico Futurity. We believe that the 300 yards of this race were very good,” said Arturo Siller Rodriguez happily, who is one of the pillars of Rancho Agua Linda.
For his part, trainer Ismael Parra said, “He
is the best that I have chosen for these races, which have become more difficult each year due to quantity and quality of the participants.” He added that he will continue to prepare him for the Mexican Bred Challenge and Breeders Futurities.
The total purse for this event was $5,201,000 pesos (approx. US $276,295), of which $3,724,400 pesos (approx. US $197,852) were allocated to reward the 10 finalists. From this amount, 1,564,248 pesos (approx. US $83,098) were paid to AS Macho, whose bank- roll already exceeds 2.2 million pesos.
In order to encourage the owners of the stal- lions corresponding to the finalists, $702,135 pesos (approximately $37,300 US) were
allocated to be distributed in the same percentages that corresponded to the prize of their progeny.
One Rainbow (Rabbits Rainbow-Woodys Wild One) was second under the com-
mand of Moisés Molina Romo. Bred by the 21 Partnership, the filly is owned by Rancho San Pedro PZH, where José Ravel Baltazar trains her. She has three wins from four starts, includ- ing first place in the Mexico Futurity.
Mirror Mi Rorra (Tabasco Special Dash- Extraordinaress), owned by Rancho Santa Anita, arrived in third driven by José Manuel Cisneros. She is trained by Epifanio Carrasco Sandoval and is bred by Javier Rosique. This filly debuted winning her heat in the qualifiers, so this was considered a very worthwhile result.
The other finalists were ordered at the finish as follows: Juanita Cartel (Danny Cartel–Toles), Q Tenampita (Tenampa Rooms–Centella Mill), Danny Cool (Danny Cartel–One Cool), Feature Horse (Sea Horse Corona–Feature Bye Jess), Perry Tres (Jesstified–Queen Tres), BR Bambino (Southern Corona–Regal Fortune) and Cheetah Banker (Cheetah Woods–Miss Mayor Banker).
