sharp break from the 3-post helped
Stormguard earn his first career stakes victory in the $125,945 John Deere Sam Houston Juvenile Challenge Stakes-G3 at Sam Houston Race Park on June 16.
Racing against a reported 8-mph head wind, Stormguard covered 350 yards in :17.755 under
jockey Nestor Duran, and his winning margin was a 1/2-length from Fire Cowboy. Juan Diaz Jr. rode the sorrel son of the American Runaway stallion Duponte for owners Maria Maldonado and Silvestre Maldonado.
Stormguard was bred in Texas by Chad Hart
and Bobby D. Cox, and he was the second-fastest qualifier from six trials contested on May 26. A $17,500 purchase at last year’s TQHA Yearling Sale, the gelding is out of Apollitical Regard, a daughter of World Champion Apollitical Jess, who won the 2017 Jaguar Rocket Futurity at Horseshoe Indianapolis.
Stormguard was winning for the second time in four races and increasing his earnings to $70,465 with the $57,935 winner’s share. The gelding earned him a berth in the John Deere Juvenile Challenge Championship-G2 at Lone Star Park on Oct. 21.
Fire Cowboy (Flying Cowboy 123-Perky) banked $25,189 for his owner, Emmanuel Villarreal. Jose Herbert rode the gelding for trainer Juan Diaz Jr.
Terrazas Family’s Vodka From Texas (Triple Vodka-Prairie War Princess) finished third. Jose Vega rode the homebred gelding for trainer Arturo Terrazas III.

War Princess), Lefty (This Is An Eagle-Last
Street Onthleft), Boks Dream Catcher (Boknaai- Nativecreek Princess), Tempting Cowboy GL (Flying Cowboy 123-Tempting Annee GL), Volcash (Volcom-Centercurlincash), and Spicy Hot Cowgirl (Flying Cowboy 123-Srirracha) completed the order of finish.

arah Huskey’s Just Wishn was a prompt favorite
in the $34,250 Colors of Texas Paint & Appaloosa Maturity-G2 at Sam Houston Race Park on June 10. Ridden by Raul Ramirez Jr. and sent to post at
odds of 7-10, Just Wishn went 350 yards in :17.569, and his margin of victory was 3/4-lengths from
19-10 second choice WL Van Halen. Esteban Rubio prepped the 5-year-old son of the Mr Jess Perry stallion Boknaai, who earned a 103 speed index while banking the $15,243 winner’s share of the purse.
Just Wishn was extending his win streak to five races. The gelding was bred in Texas by Sandra Garnett Tatom, and he is out of Just Splashin, a homebred winning 12-year-old daughter of the First Down Dash stallion Awesome Chrome.
Just Wishn’s current victory skein include
a 1/2-length win in the $40,000 Karen Utecht Memorial Stakes on Sept. 24, and a 2-length win in the $24,750 Olympia Joe Stakes on Dec. 3, both at Lone Star Park. Raced exclusively in Texas, the gelding has won 10 of 17 outs -- including four stakes -- and he has earned $129,006.
WL Van Halen APHA (MHM Hotwire-CL Trap Queen) banked the $5,822 runner-up share of the purse for his owner, Guerras Racing Stables. Ali Rivera rode the 3-year-old gelding for trainer Gilberto Gonzalez. Capo Turnpike APHA (Capo De Capi QH-Flashy Turnpike) finished third, 1 1/2-lengths behind Just Wishn, and earned $3,767 for his owner Jordan X. Rios. Victor Urieta Jr. rode the 4-year-old gelding for trainer Jose Uriegas Jr.

Adequan HOU Derby Challenge

ose N. Chavez’s Dash For The Flash kept his
perfect season record intact with a 3/4-length win in the 400-yard Adequan Sam Houston Derby Challenge at Sam Houston Race Park on June 16.
Dash For The Flash tripped the timer in :20.067 while racing against a reported 8-mph head wind. Eddie Sanchez rode the son of Champion Tempting Dash for trainer Jose Sanchez III.
The second-fastest qualifier from three trials, Dash For The Flash banked the $33,720 winner’s share of a $73,304 purse and landed a starting berth in the October 21 Adequan Derby Challenge Championship-G3 at Lone Star Park near Dallas.
Dash For The Flash was bred in Texas by Curtis Crenwelge, and he was a $25,000 purchase at the 2021 TQHA Yearling Sale.
The bay colt has won four of his six races, including all three this year, and he has earned $61,800. Jose Sanchez indicated that Dash For The Flash would be pointed to the TQHA Sires’ Cup Derby trials at Retama Park on Aug. 5.
A Game Of Corona (Dealagame-Corona Blast) banked the $14,661 runner-up share of the purse for his owner Pete A. Scarmardo. Ali Rivera rode the homebred gelding for trainer John Stinebaugh.
Chilli Red (Lethal Corona-Makeala), the fastest qualifier, finished third and earned $7,330 for his owner Mickey W. Tiner. Noe Villatoro rode the gelding for trainer Adan Guzman.
Kas Hes Revenant (A Revenant-Beaukas) ran fourth and was followed by Crimson Cash (Open Me A Corona-Zoom In On Me), Capo On Fire (Capo de Capi-Caliente Kate), Kartendo Fast Dash (Pool-Award Easy Dash), Surfin South Beach (KVN Corona-Little Surfer), and Cartel Drama (Big Drama-Separate Cartel MC). Fourth- fastest qualifier Deagree (Capo de Capi-Eye Agree) was scratched.
