    In an earlier installment of Speedlines, we looked at Leo and
how he came to be an important sire not only for Bud Warren, but also for the American Quarter Horse in general. This time, we will look more at Leo and the Warren foundation mares. Then we will cover Sugar Bars, highlighting the role he played in the Warren breeding program that was built on “short horse” speed and conformation.
First, let’s delve into some information that Bud Warren provided about
the “short horse” he loved and his appreciation for what was in those days termed the “bulldog” Quarter Horse
that shined as horses suited to the short distances. The bulldog Quarter Horses are the short powerful stocky built Quarter Horse - the kind of horse Leo represents. This perspective gives some insight into Warren’s philosophy about breeding racehorses and how his program progressed through the years.
