Leo had proved to be a good sire for the commercial market, and he crossed well with the broodmares Warren brought into his mare band along with mares owned by other breeders. We saw in the last issue that Leo was dominant in the Oklahoma Futurity with his daughter’s winning eight of the first nine Oklahoma Futurities. The first seven of these races were run at 220 yards and the last two were run at 300 yards. Today it is run at 300 yards. Warren bred and/or owned four of the nine in Leota W, Leola, Fanny Leo and Rosa Leo.
Let’s examine some of the mares that came to be a part of the Warren broodmare band that produced runners by Leo. We will find some interesting bloodlines through Peter McCue, the Old Billy Quarter Horses of South Texas and the Cajun-Bred Runners of Louisiana - all lines that were the base of short horse racing.
We will start with Julie W, a Burnett Ranch bred mare by Joe Hancock, a son of John Wilkins who was by Peter McCue. Peter McCue was sired by Dan Tucker, a sire line
descendant of Old Billy. Old Billy was sired by Shiloh and out of Ram Cat by Steel Dust. Peter McCue was out of a Thoroughbred mare named Nora M, and John Wilkins, by Peter McCue, was out of Katie Wawekus, a Thoroughbred mare. John Wilkins gives us an interesting parallel to Warren’s description of breeding those Thoroughbred studs
to stout powerful mares, as John Wilkins
was 3/4-Thoroughbred. The dam of Joe Hancock, by John Wilkins, is listed today
as the Brown Hancock mare, a daughter
of the Wilson Horse who was a riding type Percheron stallion. Percheron is a draft
breed, although some were listed as riding type Percherons and not as big as the larger version of this breed. The Brown Hancock mare’s dam was the Mundell Mare, an early race mare and her pedigree is unknown. Julie W, by Joe Hancock, produced Flit who was second to Leota W in the first Oklahoma Futurity. Julie W also produced Okie Twister, Juleo, Flutter and Mora Leota, who were all ROM runners sired by Leo.
Lena Horn, a daughter of Julie W,
was a part of the original Bud Warren broodmare band. Her sire was Dock by Zantanon by Little Joe, and Dock was out of Pluma by Valentino, and Pluma was out of Jabalina, the dam of King P-234. This makes Dock a 3/4-brother to King P-234. Little Joe was sired by Traveler, whose pedigree is unknown, but his dam Jenny was an Old Billy bred mare. Lena Horn produced 10 foals by Leo, including the stakes placed runners Leanna Leo, third in the 1959 Los Alamitos Juvenile Championship, and Leolena, third in the 1951 Pawhuska Futurity and the Kansas Futurity. The other runners by Leo out of Lena Horn were the ROM runners Leo Horn and Leovada.
Swamp Angel was a daughter of Grano De Oro by Little Joe, and Grano De Oro was out of Della Moore, who was sired by Old D J. When bred to Leo, Swamp Angel produced foals that had a breeding pattern of 4x4x3 to Della Moore, the dam of Joe Reed P-3, the double grandsire of Leo.
